first_img Foch said he had served England as if she were his own country. In our final year of First World War centenary commemorations, it is right that we mark the appointment of Marshal Foch so future generations remember the pivotal role he played in the outcome of the war. The decision to coordinate military operations under Foch’s leadership was crucial. It united the Allied forces who then fought as one to victory and peace in November 1918. The descendants of Field Marshal Haig and Marshal Foch joined Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and dignitaries from the UK and France at a ceremony dedicated to Ferdinand Foch. His appointment marked the first time the Allied forces fought under one strategic commander and was a significant factor in the successful coordinated defence against the German Spring Offensive and the gains made by the Allies in the summer of 1918.Attendees laid wreaths to honour Marshal Foch at the statue honouring him in Lower Grosvenor Gardens, Victoria, London.Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, said:center_img On 26 March, 1918, Marshal Foch was appointed Supreme Allied Commander on the Western Front. This was in response to the start of the German Spring Offensive, which pushed the Allies back to their 1914 lines. This event is the first in the Government’s 2018 programme that will help people understand how the nature of the war changed during the summer of 1918 and led to the signing of the Armistice on 11 November. The appointment of Marshal Foch as Supreme Allied Commander and the strategic leadership he brought were instrumental to the Allies’ success at the Battle of Amiens and the subsequent Hundred Days Offensive.Read the Order of Service.Matt Hancock speaks at Marshal Foch commemorationlast_img read more

first_img After Joshua, 30, regained his unified belts by exacting revenge on Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia last month, he was given a heavyweight headache after being ordered to fight Pulev and Oleksandr Usyk. The IBF have told AJ he must defend his title against Pulev – who pulled out of facing the Brit in 2017 – next while Usyk is in line for the WBO belt. But it seems the Watford hero will face ex-European champion Pulev next, after both fighters requested an extension to their negotiation deadline. However, if a deal cannot be finalised, Joshua risks being stripped of his IBF gold. A spokesman for the governing body told Sky Sports: “I have just been told that the Pulev and Joshua camps have asked until January 31 to negotiate.”Advertisement But promoter Eddie Hearn plans to negotiate a deal with the WBO that will see Usyk face Brit heavyweight Derek Chisora before facing the winner of AJ and Pulev. Hearn said: “Conversations are ongoing with all parties to plan what’s next and it will really come to a head over the next few weeks. “We are still awaiting clarification from the governing bodies to confirm who is chronologically next but right now everything is in play. Instead we have March 28 on hold at the O2.” But if Joshua faces Pulev next and has to vacate the WBO belt, ex-opponent and champion Joseph Parker will contest for the strap against Usyk. first_imgLike many expats, when 43-year-old Hrishikesh Sathawane decided to tie the knot, the US-based techie wanted a traditional Marathi ceremony in his hometown. This may sound like yet another run-of-the-mill NRI wedding… but it is not.California-based Sathawane solemnised the union with his same-sex Vietnamese partner Vinh on December 30 as per Hindu rituals in Yavatmal. “Usually, people marry in the bride or groom’s hometowns,” says Sathawane, speaking to DNA from California, adding, “If I had chosen to get married elsewhere, it would have been a problem for my family and friends to attend.”Sathawane came out to his parents in 1997, but they took about five years to digest it. “Once they accepted it, they felt I should settle down,” said the engineer-turned-marketing strategist.Read it at Nyoooz Related Itemslast_img read more
