first_imgOxford Students have begun to participate in Cambridge University’s new game, “bumpsdaq” – an online fantasy stock exchange based on the crews rowing in their May Bumps, writes Christopher Harris. There are currently two players who admit to studying at Oxford University: Stuart Jones, a member of University College’s first VIII, and an anonymous Merton student who goes by the name of Wonbyafoot. Wonbyafoot is currently doing well in 12th place, having more than doubled his or her original £10 000. But Jones is doing even better in 4th, with £45 433.84. The game currently has around 340 players, all of whom buy and sell shares in crews, and receive dividends on races leading up to the May Bumps depending on how well those crews did.ARCHIVE: 3rd Week TT 2003last_img

first_img After Joshua, 30, regained his unified belts by exacting revenge on Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia last month, he was given a heavyweight headache after being ordered to fight Pulev and Oleksandr Usyk. The IBF have told AJ he must defend his title against Pulev – who pulled out of facing the Brit in 2017 – next while Usyk is in line for the WBO belt. But it seems the Watford hero will face ex-European champion Pulev next, after both fighters requested an extension to their negotiation deadline. However, if a deal cannot be finalised, Joshua risks being stripped of his IBF gold. A spokesman for the governing body told Sky Sports: “I have just been told that the Pulev and Joshua camps have asked until January 31 to negotiate.”Advertisement But promoter Eddie Hearn plans to negotiate a deal with the WBO that will see Usyk face Brit heavyweight Derek Chisora before facing the winner of AJ and Pulev. Hearn said: “Conversations are ongoing with all parties to plan what’s next and it will really come to a head over the next few weeks. “We are still awaiting clarification from the governing bodies to confirm who is chronologically next but right now everything is in play. Instead we have March 28 on hold at the O2.” But if Joshua faces Pulev next and has to vacate the WBO belt, ex-opponent and champion Joseph Parker will contest for the strap against Usyk. first_img The 34-year-old midfielder will lead his boyhood side out at Anfield for the final time on Saturday against Crystal Palace ahead of his summer move to Los Angeles Galaxy. Reds manager Rodgers admits the player is irreplaceable and that the city of his birth owes him a great debt. Gerrard’s testimonial at Anfield in August 2013 raised about £1million and he donated £500,000 to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Charity – of which he became a founding partner – while his own foundation, set up in 2011, continues to raise money to provide grants for local causes. Rodgers said that showed the mark of the man, not just as a footballer. “I’ve asked a lot of my staff ‘If you could describe Steven in one word what would it be?'” he said. “The words which come to mind are ‘genuine’, ‘quality’, ‘world-class’ – all the adjectives you would describe him as. “I would describe him as ‘Liverpool’. Not just Liverpool as a football club but Liverpool the city. “This is a guy who is very much about looking after his people. He loves this city. “As you have seen and heard he has had number of opportunities to move from here to prestigious clubs but Liverpool is his home. “He grew up round the corner and went on to play for the club he supported and what he has given to this city, politicians haven’t given to this city. Press Association Brendan Rodgers believes Steven Gerrard is ‘Mr Liverpool’ and has done more for his home city than the politicians whose job it is to work for the betterment of the area. “What he has [done for] local hospitals and charities, all the work he does is unheralded. “He is a wonderful symbol for the people here and an incredible icon of the club. “If you think he is a good player he is an even better human being.” Planning for life without Gerrard began months ago but Rodgers accepts there is no one player he can bring in who can even hope to fill the void. However, he refused to discuss how they might get around the problem in the summer. “Today isn’t about talking about transfer policy. Today is about commemorating the career of a phenomenal player in Steven,” he added. “Not having him here will be a hole and a miss. He has shown he is one of the few genuine world-class players. “He is irreplaceable in terms of what he is but you have to keep moving forward as a club and a team.” Gerrard will be given a guard of honour for his final match at Anfield. The 34-year-old is likely to start alongside Jordan Henderson in midfield as Rodgers expects to have the same squad which drew at Chelsea last weekend. After being sidelined by a hamstring injury for five weeks defender Mamadou Sakho trained this week as did striker Mario Balotelli, who did not make the squad at Stamford Bridge. Crystal Palace manager Pardew was in charge of West Ham when Gerrard’s last-gasp long-range strike denied the Hammers FA Cup glory in the 2006 final. Liverpool salvaged a 3-3 draw at the death and went on to lift the cup on penalties, and Pardew still recalls Gerrard offering words of consolation before launching the celebrations. Pardew hailed Gerrard’s “mystique” that will cement his place in Anfield folkore. “I heard he said his best goal was the cup final goal against West Ham, for the equaliser,” said Pardew, who has a clean bill of health for the trip to Merseyside. “Nigel Reo-Coker just dropped off him at the death, and Steven smashed it into the bottom corner. “He’s done that consistently throughout his career, come up with an inspirational moment for Liverpool, and that’s why he’s loved. “And that’s why he has that tremendous mystique to his playing career. “He came up and consoled me after the cup final rather than celebrate, so that just shows the measure of the man.” Meanwhile, Pardew believes Jason Puncheon committing his long-term future to Palace will convince other top stars to stay on at Selhurst Park. Pardew has revealed former Southampton winger Puncheon has signed a four-year contract extension with the Croydon club. Defender Damien Delaney has also completed a one-year contract extension, as Palace start the process of retaining in-form stars like Puncheon, and in-demand Yannick Bolasie. Pardew has already slapped a £60million price tag on Democratic Republic of Congo winger Bolasie this term, and now believes Puncheon’s loyalty will help keep his squad together. “Yes it does help keep other players at the club,” said Pardew, after Puncheon committed to Palace until June 2019. “You need to keep your best technical players. “The level we are at, in terms of that 10 or 15 clubs below the very top teams, it’s difficult to get players of Punch’s ability. “So it’s very important for us to secure him, I’m very pleased about it. “He can play a number of roles and we can look forward to seeing more of him next year.” last_img read more

first_img…chemotherapy to end by May 2019President David Granger on Tuesday morning left Guyana, accompanied by his wife, Sandra Granger, for his second round of chemotherapy in Cuba.Prior to his departure at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), the President said that the Centro de Investigaciones Médico Quirúrgicas (CIMEQ) has drafted a schedule of treatment, which will run until May 2019.“In my first visit, I had not only the biopsy but a series of tests and examinations and I also had my first cycle of chemotherapy.I now have to return for succeeding five cycles, so this is the second cycle and I hope to return much more quickly than I did the first visit ,because this is simply the administration of chemotherapy so presumably after the tests, which will be done today (Tuesday), I will have the chemotherapy and return by weekend,” Granger said.According to the Ministry of the Presidency, Granger will return to Cuba later thisPresident David Granger and First Lady Sandra Granger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri on Tuesdaymonth for his third round of treatment.“I expect that by the start of the new year, my progress, which has been gradual so far, will be sufficient to allow me to take on more duties,” he said. The Head of State added that he was very grateful for all the prayers and get-well messages he has received for his full and complete recovery, especially from Caribbean Heads of Government, business leaders, his colleagues, the churches and the public, particularly those who held vigils while he was in Cuba.“I think my illness, although personally unfortunate, has brought forth a response by the Guyanese public, not to a politician, not to a political leader, but to a national President. I think they feel the presidency is what is being jeopardised by this threat to my health and I think what I have seen so far, both privately and publicly, are favourable national concern that the Head of State, whomever he may be, should enjoy the best health,” he said.On October 30, 2018, the President and the First Lady travelled to Cuba for him to undergo medical tests after he complained of feeling unwell. It was later revealed that the Head of State was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, which is a type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of your immune system. Clear fluid, called lymph, flows through the lymphatic vessels and contains infection-fighting white blood cells, known as lymphocytes. He was discharged from the hospital on November 6 after undergoing a series of tests and surgical procedures. He returned to Guyana on November 20 after he was given approval by his medical team to travel.According to webmd.com, chemotherapy targets cells that grow and divide quickly, as cancer cells do. Unlike radiation or surgery, which target specific areas, chemo can work throughout the body. But it can also affect some fast-growing healthy cells, like those of the skin, hair, intestines, and bone marrow. That’s what causes some of the side effects from the treatment. According to the website, some of the most common side effects of chemotherapy are fatigue, hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anaemia (low red blood cell counts), nausea and vomiting, appetite changes, and constipation.Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, during his weekly post-Cabinet briefing on Friday last, disclosed that even though President Granger’s workload has been reduced, he remained in charge of the State’s business. In May of this year, Granger and the First Lady had travelled to Trinidad and Tobago to undergo what was referred to as their annual medical check-up.At the time, and in response to reports in the press, the Government had revealed that the couple did their examinations under a Caribbean medical insurance scheme at the Good Health Medical Centre. Those results, Government had said, indicated a clean bill of health.last_img read more
