first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Debapriya Mondal for the Economic Times of India:The government plans to scrap four special purpose vehicles (SPVs) set up for ultra mega power plants (UMPP) in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Odisha due to lack of interest from the host states, a top government official has told ET. He added that as the government is focusing on UMPPs at Cheyyur in Tamil Nadu, Bedabahal in Odisha and Banka in Bihar, the other projects could take years to come up. “Keeping these running would only add to the expenditure.”While the four host states have claimed they are power surplus and do not require a plant of such large scale as of now, land acquisition has also become a hurdle for these UMPPs. “We do not have land for the Karnataka and Maharashtra projects. For the Odisha UMPP, no mine has been allotted so far,” the official said. These SPVs were set up around 2008-09 when the government launched the UMPP programme. For the Chhattisgarh UMPP at Surguja, the government initially failed to secure coal supply. Now, the state has conveyed that it does not want any such project as it has become power surplus. The Karnataka and Maharashtra projects were to be set up in coastal regions and meant to be fed on imported coal. However, the government failed to acquire any land for those and the states have also taken a backseat with the delays.Full article: Government plans to scrap four SPVs set up for UMPPs due to lack of interest from host states India Steps Back From 4 Proposed Coal-Fired Ultra Mega Power Plantslast_img read more

first_imgWhile everyone is hearing about “record” sales by vehicle manufacturers, everything is not a bed of roses for those making loans on these vehicles. Even though new vehicle financing was up 86.3% in Q1 2016 compared to 84.9% a year ago, margins are still squeezed to razor thin levels, and the competition vying for this finite market is getting even more aggressive. As most lenders know by now, the auto lending pool of competition no longer only includes credit unions, banks, and dealers. Insurance companies, ‘buy here, pay here’ car lots, and online retailers makes the auto lending business that much more competitive for credit unions. In order to compete with dealers, we see lenders lowering their credit criteria in order to win business. In addition, since auto prices have continued to climb, we are seeing a reversal to the days of extended loan terms on these vehicles to make the payment more affordable for the consumer. Likewise, consumers are staying in their vehicles longer. In fact, according to CNBC, in 2006, car owners traded in their vehicles after approximately 4.3 years. In 2016, that number jumped to 6.5 years. On another note, as gasoline prices continue to remain low, consumers are more attracted to larger vehicles, and the sticker price on those vehicles certainly isn’t going down. Just take a trip to your local Ford dealership and look at the cost of a nicely appointed F150.Low gas prices driving consumer demand for higher-priced vehicles may be good for the economy in the short term, but in the long term it could become a problem for lenders. If the economy continues its slow recovery, you might start seeing an increase in delinquencies. According to Experian’s State of the Automotive Finance Market, some credit unions already have been seeing this, as 60-day delinquencies rose to 0.42% in Q1 2016 from 0.35% in Q1 2015.Reduced used car prices and longer loan terms have been decimating the GAP market for the last 18 months, causing extremely high losses. This cost will ultimately flow down to lenders and dealers. Coupled with that, any spike in gas prices will drive people into more economical vehicles, further declining GAP performance. Many people, me included, were very hopeful for 2016, and in some areas that hope remains. However, it’s hard to ignore that a lot of challenges exist—both known and unknown. How will regulatory pressures impact lenders? How will the economy perform? Where are gas prices heading and how will those prices affect every other area of the economy? How will the outcome of the presidential election impact consumers and businesses in the short- and long-term? A crystal ball would be nice, but in its absence, we all just need to be diligent, find creative and efficient ways to reduce risk and generate income, and prepare ourselves to quickly react to however the chips may fall.In an effort to help our clients find creative ways to stand out in an increasingly competitive auto lending market, we developed our recent ebook, Stand Out from the Auto Lending Crowd. Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison seldom shies away from a fight, so it’s no surprise his company came out swinging over an unfavorable Forrester Research report.Forrester certainly struck a nerve when it released a survey on Wednesday that found a majority of customers using Oracle’s e-Business Suite, PeopleSoft and Siebel business applications had no interest in switching to the company’s next-generation Fusion Applications. Those laggards are complicating Oracle’s efforts to reverse a slowdown in application revenue, Forrester said.Oracle’s ResponseIn a three-page counterattack, Oracle tore into the market-research firm. “This is a speculative note based on misconceptions and wrong hypotheses,” the company thundered.(See also “Why Oracle Fusion Doesn’t Excite Customers“)Despite Oracle’s ostensible outrage, its counterattack is unconvincing. The company claims Forrester did not talk to enough of its customers to back its claims, as if the firm was doing a random survey of all of Oracle’s customers.Forrester never said it was doing that kind of survey. Instead, the respondents came from 180 of the firm’s contacts that were responsible for choosing IT products and had knowledge of Oracle applications. “While nonrandom, the survey is still a valuable tool for understanding where users are today and where the industry is headed,” the report says.Commonsense would tell you that there are more reasons for Oracle customers to stay with the applications they have than to move to Fusion, which has a different code base. Such an undertaking is expensive, takes a long time and draws IT staff away from other pressing projects. With the older applications still being upgraded and working just fine, why would anyone want to make a major change?(See the full text of its rebuttal below.)The most damaging part of the survey was Forrester’s finding that 65% of customers using the older business applications had no plans to switch to Fusion. Another 24% were on the fence.Oracle complained that the survey only covered U.S. and European customers. Likewise, it noted that more than 40% of the respondents were in manufacturing, government, education and healthcare – industries it claims aren’t representative of Oracle’s overall customer base. For instance, Oracle cited an IDC report noting that Fusion doesn’t yet fully support manufacturing operations, implying that manufacturers might reasonably be less than interested in making the switch to immature applications.Ellison and company also moaned that many questions were phrased in a “negative way,” as if that somehow disqualified the responses. Such questions included “What do you dislike most about your firm’s most important Oracle applications?” and “Why doesn’t your firm plan to use Oracle Fusion Applications?”Who Do You Believe? The report also claimed that Oracle has no clear strategy for migrating customers to Fusion. The company disagreed, saying it has always told customers they could adopt pieces of the product portfolio at their own pace and that everything – old and new – would work together.Forrester also said that customers staying with the older applications were missing out on innovation. Again Oracle cried foul, saying that at Oracle OpenWorld last year, the company discussed future releases for E-Business Suite and PeopleSoft, as well as roadmaps for all its applications. Examples of innovation include iPad certification in PeopleSoft and new mobile capabilities in Siebel, Oracle said.Despite Oracle’s protestations, Forrester is not budging. “We stand by the report,” spokesman Phil LeClare said. So, readers will have to decide whom they believe. Personally, given Oracle’s recent lack of truth in advertising and its tendency to pretend to have cloud technology when it doesn’t, I’ll lean toward Forrester. Here’s the full Oracle rebuttal: 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of…last_img read more

first_imgBrazil’s David Luiz, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, and Oscar practice during a training session at the Estadio Nacional. (AP Photo)Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said it would be “stupid” to think his team would consider playing deliberately for a draw against Cameroon in order to choose its second-round opponent at the World Cup.Scolari dismissed any chance that Brazil would not try to win Monday’s decisive Group A match in Brasilia.”You have to win the match, you have to advance to the next round,” Scolari said. “Some people have been saying that we might consider playing to choose our opponent, but they are either stupid or ill-intentioned. We have to play to advance, not to choose anything. We have to play to win.”Brazil, Mexico and Croatia are still in contention to advance from Group A. Netherlands and Chile are playing to determine No. 1 and No. 2 in Group B – the winners of these groups next play the second-place team in the other.Brazil needs at least a draw against Cameroon to guarantee a berth in the round of 16. A win will likely secure first place in the group, but even a loss could be enough for the hosts to advance depending on the result of the match between Mexico and Croatia, which will be played at the same time in Recife.Netherlands and Chile play in Sao Paulo before Brazil’s match on Monday. Both teams have already qualified for the next round and a draw will secure the Dutch in first place. The Netherlands eliminated Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.advertisementScolari dismissed any nation of the possibility of match fixing in Monday’s match because Cameroon is already eliminated. He said even the suggestion of “match manipulation” was “disrespectful to Cameroon, not only to us.”Brazil, the only team to play in all 20 World Cups, has advanced to the second round in every tournament since 1970. This is one of the few times that the five-time champions haven’t reached the last group match with a spot in the round of 16 virtually secured.”If we had beaten Mexico we would be a lot less anxious ahead of this match,” Scolari said. “But we know that we can advance with two of the three results.”Brazil opened with a 3-1 win over Croatia before being held to a 0-0 draw by Mexico. Cameroon began the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Mexico and then fell 4-0 to Croatia.Cameroon is already certain to start without its captain and most experienced player, Samuel Eto’o, who has a right knee injury.Scolari said Brazil will play with the same lineup he used in the opening win against Croatia, with Hulk in attack. The striker missed the match against Mexico after a left leg muscle injury.”We could change a few things if we had already advanced,” Scolari said. “But now we have to use what we think is our best team. We have to do everything possible to advance.”Brazil will be playing its 100th World Cup match on Monday, becoming the second team to reach the milestone, after Germany.last_img read more
