first_imgComcast operates the customer service center out of a trailer on city-owned property on Shelter Road. By Donald WittkowskiDespite what Mayor Jay Gillian described as exhaustive efforts by Ocean City to keep the company in town, cable giant Comcast is closing its customer service center on Nov. 18.Word of Comcast’s pullout was met with complaints and criticism from city officials and customers, including a suggestion by one councilman to invite other cable companies to town to provide competition for Comcast.Gillian, in remarks to City Council at its meeting Tuesday night, said Comcast is leaving even though “we’ve done everything humanly possible” to save the customer center. Those efforts included allowing Comcast to operate the customer center at two city-owned locations without having to pay rent.Angered by Comcast’s departure, Councilman Michael DeVlieger wants the governing body to “explore all options” for cable service in town. DeVlieger noted that would include the possibility of attracting other cable companies to Ocean City to provide competition for what he termed Comcast’s monopoly.DeVlieger said Comcast’s pullout is “completely uncalled for.” He also said he is dissatisfied with the company’s level of service and how much it charges its customers.“I pay more for cable TV than I pay for my car,” DeVlieger said in an interview. “When you add in the Internet and the phone, the sad thing is I really do.”Gillian noted that Ocean City is the latest community to see Comcast close a customer service center. The company has been replacing the local centers with its Xfinity brand stores, which operate like retail outlets and allow Comcast to showcase its products and services.Comcast corporate spokeswoman Jennifer Bilotta said the Xfinity stores provide an array of customer services. She also said customers are moving away from the traditional walk-in style service centers, like the one in Ocean City, to pay their bills, turn in their cable equipment and purchase Comcast products.Much of the customer contact with Comcast is now done online or through the company’s apps, Bilotta said.“Customer use of the temporary Ocean City trailer, which will close Nov. 18, has been steadily decreasing as a direct result of the numerous self-help options we now provide and use at the new Xfinity store in Mays Landing,” she said.Comcast opened an Xfinity store at the Consumer Square shopping center on Wrangleboro Road in Mays Landing last March. Ocean City customers are being encouraged by Comcast to go to Mays Landing or to the Xfinity store in Rio Grande after Nov. 18.“At the new Xfinity store in Mays Landing, customers who used the (Ocean City) center will be able to use that store or any of our other convenient ways to pay their bills, learn about our products and services, get equipment or schedule appointments,” Bilotta said.Since 2015, Comcast has operated its Ocean City customer service center from a trailer located at Shelter Road off Tennessee Avenue.Comcast customers interviewed Wednesday complained that it would be inconvenient for them to drive about 15 miles to Mays Landing to use the Xfinity store.“It’s a long way to go,” said John Hamilton, a summer resident who lives at Bayberry Cove in Upper Township.Another Comcast customer, John Kenney, called it “a major inconvenience” to have to travel to Mays Landing.“Now, I’ll have to drive 15 miles. It’s terrible,” said Kenney, a summer resident in Ocean City. This is not the first time that Comcast has said it was closing the Shelter Road location. It originally announced the customer center would shut down in March, but Comcast kept it open through the summer tourism season to accommodate Ocean City’s visitors.Ocean City’s population swells from about 11,700 year-round residents to 150,000 visitors during the summer influx of tourists and vacation-home owners. The majority of those visitors use Comcast’s services.Gillian said that even after the summer season is over, the customer service center remains busy on weekends. The city’s efforts to keep Comcast in town include allowing it to operate rent-free at the municipal-owned Shelter Road site.Previously, the city allowed Comcast to operate its customer center rent-free for two years when it was located on town property at Fifth Street and Asbury Avenue. The company had to relocate to Shelter Road last year after the city built a skateboarding park on Fifth Street.Comcast once had a customer center at 341 West Ave. However, that building was damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Bilotta said Comcast was a tenant at West Avenue and had to leave after the landlord decided not to repair the damage following the hurricane.A notice taped to the door tells customers that the center will close on Nov. 18.last_img read more

first_imgYour daily outdoor news bulletin for September 30th, the day Wyoming became the first state to give women the vote, proving that in the land of no people, the woman is king:Blue Ridge Parkway to Stay OpenWith a U.S. government shutdown looming, and with Congress still not doing anything about it, federal agencies are attempting to go about their business like nothing is wrong while simultaneously going about their business like there is a class 5 hurricane bearing down on them. One such agency is the National Park Service which could affect Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Shenandoah National Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway – of course there will be other casualties in the park system but those are the big fish so to speak. All inquiries into the matter are being deflected to the Department of the Interior, but a shutdown now could have a huge economic effect on not only the parks in question, but also the surrounding communities given this is the most popular time for all three. It is leaf peeping season after all. Officials with the Blue Ridge Parkway, while considering closing the 400+ mile road earlier in the week, now say the BRP will stay open through a shutdown although all campsites, historical sites, visitors centers, etc. will be closed. For a full report, and an interesting story on what Arizona tried to do with the Grand Canyon during the 1995 shutdown, see this National Parks Traveler story.National Registry of Stolen Bikes…MaybeWhen you have your bike stolen, there are many emotions that run through you. Maybe you feel betrayal that your privacy was violated, maybe you feel angry someone stole your whip, maybe you feel frustrated the police are not really able to do anything for you. Well, a group in Chicago is working on that last one. Through a site called Bike Index, a group of advocates is hoping to provide riders a more comprehensive way to track down their stolen bike. Many cities and communities already have bike registry services, but they usually involve paperwork and a trip to the police station, and they are kept private. Bike Index wants to streamline the process by allowing users to register their bikes online using the bikes serial number. With more access and public info, and more bikes registered, the operation will not only help people track down their bikes when they get stolen, but discourage future thefts. The service is only available in Chicago at this time, but the founders hope to expand nationwide.Check out the story on Fastcoexist.com and their Kickstarter campaign.Annapolis HonoredThe brackish community of Annapolis, Maryland is the latest community to receive an honor from the National Wildlife Federation. This week, the city was designated a National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat, becoming the 71st Community Wildlife Habitat in the nation, and second in Maryland. It seems as though the honor is the cumulative capstone in Annapolis’s efforts to green up their city: “A Community Wildlife Habitat project creates multiple habitat areas in backyards, schoolyards, corporate properties, community gardens, parkland and other spaces.”Click here for more details via the Baltimore News Journal.last_img read more

first_imgI have a good friend who regularly refers to Elliot Root as “he.”And it drives me bananas.Elliot Root is not a “he.” Just like Jethro Tull isn’t a “he.” Just like Steely Dan isn’t a “he.” Just like Lynyrd Skynyrd (sort of) isn’t a “he.”Instead, Elliot Root is a band. A “they,” if you will. And I cannot emphasize enough how incredible I think they are.Few bands have resonated with me, over the last two years, the way Elliot Root has. If you were to check out my Spotify plays, my stats would be dominated by Elliot Root songs. You might think that, for weeks on end, I listened to little else. And you’d be right. The two EPs Elliot Root has released offer tremendous songwriting and a universally approachable sound. My wife digs them. My 17 year old son digs them. My 9 year old son digs them. My friends dig them, with one musical buddy recently offering the observation that Elliot Root simply hasn’t written a song he doesn’t like. That’s a double negative I can stand by.This week, Elliot Root will finally release their first full length record, Conjure. I have anticipated very few records like I have this one, with each released track whetting my appetite for the whole thing.Elliot Root is a band that has it. A nebulous thing, it is really hard to describe what it is. But I know it when I hear it.And they have it.I recently chatted with singer Scott Krueger about the new record, touring with Dwight Yoakam, and getting lost.BRO – Thanks for chatting, but I was hoping to talk to Mr. Root . . .SK – Oh, I didn’t know. Let me grab him for you!BRO – After putting out a couple EPs, how does it feel to have a long player out there?SK – It’s great to be able to do a full length album. It’s something we’ve been building towards for a while. We always wanted to have an “album” album, a cohesive piece of art that we could tell a story with.BRO – I know you guys spent some time on the road with Dwight Yoakam this summer. At first glance, it seems like an interesting pairing. How as that run of shows?SK – It was definitely an interesting pairing. We were quite surprised to hear that he asked us to join him on the road for a bit. We had a great time and Dwight and his crew treated us very well. The crowds were a bit surprised to see a band like us opening, but it was a challenge to try and connect with them and win them over every night.BRO – We are featuring “Lost Man Running” on this month’s Trail Mix. What’s the story behind the song?SK – This is a song about being okay with admitting that we can feel lost sometimes. I feel like we have pushed further and further in our culture towards a place where it is harder to admit when you feel lost or need a little help. I wanted to write something that I hoped people could resonate with and maybe find comfort in, knowing that someone else knows what their situation feels like.BRO – What’s your favorite city to get lost in?SK – We get to travel to a lot of cool places, so this answer is likely to change from time to time. Right now, I’d have to say my favorite place to get lost in this last year has been Washington, D.C. I don’t know why, but it has a really strange and surreal feeling. For all the power that the city holds, it actually is kind of quiet and neatly organized. It reminds me that behind all the crazy politics is a humanity. Even in the tense political times we are living in now, that gives me hope.Elliot Root will be celebrating the release of Conjure on Friday at the Red Brick Roads Music & Arts Festival in Clinton, Mississippi. Dates in Nashville and Bristol follow soon after. For more information on Elliot Root, the new record, or when they will hit a stage near you, surf on over to the band’s website.last_img read more

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York Anxiety is paralyzing. It is a fear-based monster moving through the bodies of all agescausing many degrees of physical and emotional paralysis. Anyone who has experienced a panic attack or generalized anxiety attack knows this and knows the fear that goes with it.Unfortunately, in today’s times it seems to have populated itself among our young, showing up in OCD, phobias and generalized anxiety – which means fear dictates their lives instead of a young healthy sense of self. So, what is a healthy sense of self and what is to be done about this?Your sense of self is your center it is where yourself lives. This is true for all of us not just the young, but I have found it very interesting in my practice that it is the young who are most open to putting into practice a simple technique that will bring them to their center. It will not develop their sense of self, but it will bring them to their center, so that they can be in control rather than be controlled.Hence, have the opportunity to slowly develop their own sense of self, which becomes stymied by fear. This technique is a simple breathing technique – yet not so simplistic. It is in the slowness of the breathing that brings about the correct response. One must count to six or seven as one breaths in and the same as one breaths out. As if one were taking the air in through their feet, all the way up – hold for a second and then release just as slow back down through their feet. One can do this in the face of an abuser – someone who is berating or humiliating theminstead of responding in tears or anger – rather stay in control instead and respond rationally as desired. Whether it is a teacher, parent, sibling, friend or partner – it does not matter – the breathing will keep you centered and allow you to get through it.For years the Buddhist population have used this technique to bring themselves to theircenter so why is it so surprising that it would work for others as well. It is not a lark. Yoga breathing will bring you to your center if it is diligently put into practice. The difference is the slowness in breathing verses regular breathing. This slowness causes a physical response opening needed airways that carry oxygen to the brain hence, enabling one to think rationally rather than the frozen confusion and panic that usually evolves from anxiety.I find young people are able to put this technique into effect more so than adults for some reason. Perhaps it is because they are eager to learn and looking for answers. But because of this, they often are able to put their anxiety to rest by centering themselves, taking control and moving on through their lives.Sandra Reinhart is a Psychotherapist with a private practice in Babylon.last_img read more

first_imgFeb 20, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – The rapidly growing list of countries facing H5N1 avian influenza in birds has swelled to include Egypt, France, and India in the past 4 days, and the virus is suspected in Bosnia as well.Egyptian officials first reported on Feb 17 that about 20 dead birds had tested positive for the virus, according to an Associated Press report that day. A United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization official said the virus had reached Cairo via an infected turkey taken to market there, and outbreaks had been found in backyard chickens and rooftop coops in Giza, across the Nile River from Cairo. In addition, Egypt’s health minister said the disease had been found in three provinces in the Nile delta and in Fayoum, a farming region southwest of Cairo, according to a Reuters report today. The report said the sudden arrival and spread of the virus had caused widespread panic among Egyptians. The economic impact could be severe, because the poultry industry in Egypt supports 2.5 million to 3 million people, and Egyptians are heavily dependent on poultry for protein, according to UN officials quoted in the story. In France, a wild duck found near Lyon tested positive for H5N1 on Feb 18, according to an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report published today. France became the sixth European Union (EU) member to find the virus in birds, after Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Slovenia. (Infected birds have also been found in several non-EU countries in Europe, including Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, and Ukraine.)India confirmed its first avian outbreak of H5N1 the same day as France, Feb 18. The virus was found in chickens in the western state of Maharashtra, where 50,000 birds died last week, according to an AFP report.A Feb 19 Bloomberg News report said the virus had affected as many as 52 poultry farms at Nawapur in the northern part of the state, of which Mumbai is the capital. State officials said they had created 60 teams to destroy poultry on 48 farms in 19 villages, the story said.About 20,000 of an estimated 500,000 birds near Nawapur were destroyed yesterday, according to an AFP report published today. The report said teams of inexperienced agricultural were struggling to slaughter the chickens, beating and strangling some. One farmer said the government had promised to pay farmers the equivalent of US 80 cents per bird, little more than a third of the cost of raising them, AFP reported. In Bosnia, tests confirmed an H5 virus in two wild swans, prompting the government to order the slaughter of about 4,400 poultry, according to an AFP report today. The swans were found at a lake near the town of Jajce in the central part of the Balkan country.Samples from the swans were sent to a laboratory in Weybridge, England, to determine if the virus is H5N1, the story said.In Hungary, two more wild swans tested positive for an H5 virus, AFP reported today. Samples will be sent to Weybridge for further testing. Hungarian authorities were still waiting for the results of further tests on swans that tested positive for an H5 virus last week, AFP reported.Malaysia has confirmed its first poultry outbreak of H5N1 since late 2004, according to another AFP report published today. The story said tests were run after 40 chickens on a farm north of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, died last week. The country’s agriculture minister called the outbreak an “isolated case.” He said authorities had destroyed all the chickens on nearby farms and had taken steps to ensure that no poultry were moved out of the area.Malaysia had declared itself free of avian flu in January 2005, according to AFP.last_img read more
