Knitting Europe together

first_imgThe Obama administration seeks a “path to a better way” for the nations of southeastern Europe, and a top administration official laid out the components of that strategy during a talk on Wednesday (Feb. 17) sponsored by Harvard Kennedy School’s Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe.Phillip H. Gordon, U.S. assistant secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, told an audience in the Goodman Classroom that “the political and economic integration” of southeastern Europe within the rest of the continent is the key to regional stabilization and development in the years ahead.“We have a vision of a peaceful and stable Europe that will extend to Turkey and the Caucasus,” he said. “The solution lies in transnational cooperation and institutions that guarantee the rights of citizens, promote economic freedom, insure the viability of the border, and provide a reliable forum for the peaceful resolution of disputes.”Gordon pointed to the critical importance of regional and international institutions in this effort, specifically NATO and the European Union. Several southeastern European countries are now members of the EU, including Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania, and several belong to NATO, including Albania, Croatia, and Turkey. Other nations are seeking entry into one or both organizations.“The opportunity for political engagement that crosses national borders reduces the salience and pressure of ethnic and regional disputes within countries. That is the promise of the project of European integration,” Gordon said.Recent decades have brought tremendous change to the region, Gordon added, and the United States is now developing close and productive relations with several nations in the area, including Serbia, which was beset by violence and instability as recently as a decade ago.“I certainly believe … that with pragmatism and goodwill on both sides, U.S.-Serbian relations could be a model of a productive partnership by the end of the administration’s first term,” Gordon said. “This change in the Balkans is a reminder not only of what can be possible, but also what remains to be done” elsewhere.Kosovo is another example of a “remarkable story of progress” in the Balkans, Gordon said, although he admitted the country faces serious challenges that will require a “great deal of work” moving forward.Gordon also pointed to the critical roles that Greece and Turkey will play in helping stabilize southeastern Europe, arguing that “regional political leadership and courage and vision is necessary for progress.”In his concluding remarks, Gordon cited the fact that “some of the same fault lines” that have plagued the region for many years still remain, but that he is hopeful there is a “clear potential solution” in the full economic and political integration of the southeastern states within greater Europe.Gordon was introduced at the podium by Elaine Papoulias, director of the Kokkalis Program. About 100 people attended the lecture.last_img read more

first_img28 November 2013Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe emphasised positive developments and untapped potential in South Africa’s mining industry during a working visit to Canada this week during which he engaged intensively with mining executives, investors, bankers and asset managers.During his three-day trip, which ended on Wednesday, Motlanthe also met with members of the Canada-Southern Africa Chamber of Business, visited the Toronto Stock Exchange and paid a courtesy call on Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.Canada is a major investor in South Africa’s mining industry, and Motlanthe used his trip to encourage further investment, saying in an interview with Mining Weekly Online in Toronto that mining remained central to South Africa’s economy.“Motlanthe affirmed that the industry was still the country’s most significant currency earner and, despite more than a century of intensive exploitation, the industry was but turning over a fresh leaf and poised for significant growth, boosted by newly overhauled mining legislation dealing with inefficiencies, and by lifting domestic beneficiation levels,” Mining Weekly reported on Wednesday.Motlanthe told Mining Weekly that South Africa’s mining industry should not be measured solely by the performance of its gold sector, as there were huge proven unexploited deposits in other sectors, including iron ore, diamonds, manganese, platinum and chrome. On legislation, Motlanthe told miningweekly.com that the upcoming amendments to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act would streamline licence application processes, “shortening the turnaround time for juniors significantly”.At the same time, he said, a great deal of progress had been made in transforming South Africa’s mining labour landscape.“At the moment, we are involved with an all inclusive dialogue, a framework crafted and agreed to by all stakeholders, including organised labour, businesses, affiliated mining houses and government, through which we look at the whole range of archaic practices that serve as irritants today – methods that were previously used to serve the industry very well in terms of securing cheap labour,” he told Mining Weekly. He said there was now wide consensus on how such practices should be reformed.“We are encouraging mines to look into implementing a shorter six-month work cycle, to allow migrant miners to return home more frequently. That is still a work in progress, but we think it will remove many of the social deterrents and irritants of the mining industry.”Addressing members of the Canada-Southern Africa Chamber of Business on Tuesday, Motlanthe described South Africa as a country of contrasts.“On one hand we have sophisticated and advanced systems, such as those within the financial sector and mining sectors. At the same time, we have the part of South Africa that is underdeveloped, unskilled and poorly educated. These are accumulated disabilities that have confronted our country since 1994.”He said the government was directing resources at these social problems “which, once addressed, will help propel the country forward.“South Africa and Canada have a lot in common, and Canada has certain strengths that would be of great help for South African development, particularly in areas such as mining, engineering and education. We aim to strengthen and cement the bonds between our two countries.”Motlanthe was accompanied on his trip by Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant and Deputy Mineral Resources Minister Godfrey Oliphant.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Being a seed dealer, we get a lot of questions about conventional corn compared to triple stack corn. Guys were wanting to cut costs with conventional corn this year, but we have seen in the fields and heard from customers as much as 60-bushel differences between refuge corn and triple stack corn. The triple stack corn was better side-by-side.There was a wide range of yields by different hybrids. Most of the hybrids we have really leaned on in recent years still did fairly well. Our disappointment was with the newer hybrids that didn’t take the stress as well as some of our older hybrids. I don’t know how much you can rely on the data we saw this year. Some of the information on hybrids this year is not necessarily something you want to take to the bank.We had some Artesian drought tolerant hybrids from Syngenta. Personally I didn’t think it was dry enough at the end of summer that it would have hurt our corn, but after I shelled the Artesian hybrids it looks like the dry weather took more yield out of our corn and soybeans in this area than I had thought. We have seen good things with that Artesian technology. It doesn’t necessarily save 100% of your yield, but it does help with dry conditions.last_img read more

first_imgNew gestures, peak and pop, allow users to lightly touch New gestures, peak and pop, allow users to lightly touch to get a preview of media or other item such as an email ? a peak ? and press longer and harder to pop out the content for a full view. The gestures can also activate an activity menu to jump to particular places within an app. The new A9 processor will have 70 per cent faster performance and 90 per cent faster graphics, but will also boost battery life in conjunction with Apples new version of the iPhones operating system iOS 9. The pressure-sensitive touches are accompanied by Apples Taptic engine, first introduced with the Apple Watch, vibrating with short, tap-like feedback. Apple has improved the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to make it twice as fast for unlocking the device and authenticating purchases with Apple Pay. It has also improved the 8-megapixel camera of the iPhone 6, fitting a new, more powerful 12-megapixel sensor on the back. The new addition is capable of shooting 4K video and takes on Samsung and other rivals with their 16-megapixel, feature-rich cameras. Apples iMovie app on the iPhone 6S can also edit video in 4K. The front-facing selfie camera has also been improved with a new 5-megapixel sensor, Apples first upgrade to the front camera since the 1.2-megapixel sensor of 2012s iPhone 5. The phone will use the screen to mimic a camera flash for front-facing photos. The new iPhone can also shoot so-called Live Photos, which capture video and sound along with a photo for 1.5 seconds each side of the capture event, very similar to HTCs Zoe feature introduced with itsOne M7 smartphone in 2013. Following the apparent bending of the iPhone 6 Plus within user pockets, Apple has used a new stronger aluminium for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus frames. The “7,000 series aluminium” was first introduced with the Apple Watch Sport and is 60 per cent stronger than standard aluminium alloys, according to Apple. The stronger aluminium should help prevent the iPhone from bending, but could also increase the smartphones scratch resistance. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will also be available in a new rose-gold colour, the pink gold will be sold in addition to the gold variant which was first introduced with the iPhone 5S in 2013, primarily toappeal to the Chinese market. In another notable change, Siri can be activated via voice for the first time, using the command “Hey Siri.” That will allow users to ask the digital assistant to play music or make a phone call, even while washing dishes or preparing a meal. In older models, Siri can only be activated by pressing the phones home button. The new feature helps Apple catch up to other devices, such as the Amazon Echo speaker and many Android phones, that can already be activated by voice. Also, owners of newer models of the iPhone can upgrade to the new iOS 9 operating system starting September 16. PTI SHK CPSadvertisementlast_img read more

They go home as happy as we are.”WORST DISPLAYS It was actually one of the worst Palace displays under Hodgson and Watford will be kicking themselves for not wrapping up the points before halftime. The visitors went ahead after three minutes when Daryl Janmaat was given far too much space to head in Richarlison’s chipped cross at the back post.It was actually one of the worst Palace displays under Hodgson and Watford will be kicking themselves for not wrapping up the points before halftime.advertisementThe visitors went ahead after three minutes when Daryl Janmaat was given far too much space to head in Richarlison’s chipped cross at the back post.Wilfried Zaha had a hand in both of Palace’s goals, the first scored when Sako shinned the ball in after it came back to him from Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes’s close-range save.Zaha then tricked his way past Janmaat on the left side of the box before picking out McArthur to score with a low shot.Palace are now unbeaten in their last six league games and a point above the drop zone while Watford, who are in ninth place on 22 points, have taken one point from their last four matches.(Courtesy: Reuters)last_img read more
