A local businessman, who did not want to be named, said there was a lot of crime in the area and shopkeepers in the area felt especially vulnerable.He said: “There are a lot of criminal gangs that operate in this area. People are afraid to report crimes to the police because they are scared they will come back for them.“There have been less patrols recently and the gangs have realised this and have become more confident with their ability to quickly get away from the scene of a crime.” A nearby restaurant owner also said criminals were becoming increasingly brazen.The businessman, who asked not to be identified, said: “There are a drugs being sold in this area by organised criminals.“Everybody knows that if you call the police about an incident that doesn’t involve a knife or a death they will not consider it as an emergency. The owner of the Amir jewellery store thanked the “heroes” for helping to apprehend the suspects and described how he and a colleague had taken refuge in the basement, when the robbers struck.Adil Al Ahmady, 44, said: “The people on the street challenging these robbers were amazing. They are heroes and I thank them.” “My wife is worried all the time. I’m thinking of hiring security men for the summer as there are families who sit outside my restaurant. (@MojAlHoseine) May 20, 2019 A moped gang, who allegedly stole more than £150,000 in gold from a jewellers, were apprehended when local shopkeepers and passers by gave chase and cornered one of them.The robbers, who were armed with a machete, hammers and a crowbar, struck in broad daylight at the shop in Maida Vale, north west London during Monday’s evening rush hour.Footage captured by shocked bystanders on mobile phones, showed the moment the gang, who were wearing motorcycle helmets, burst out of the store and attempted to make their getaway on waiting mopeds.But a group of heroic locals gave chase and managed to surround one of the gang, tackling him with makeshift weapons, including a belt and a traffic cone.Police were on the scene within six minutes and four other alleged gang members were apprehended a short time later. He said: “I was with a patient in here when I heard some commotion and went outside. I saw two guys on bikes with helmets and another stood outside our door with a huge machete.“The receptionist and I ran to the door and locked it in case he came inside.
