first_imgThe closure of up to four obstetric units including Letterkenny General Hospital is mooted in a confidential report commissioned by the HSE.Letterkenny HospitalThe units at Ballinasloe, Castlebar, Sligo and/or Letterkenny could close as part of a reconfiguration of maternity services in the two regions, according to options set out in the politically explosive report, seen by The Irish Times.While the HSE says no decisions have been made yet, the study by consultants the Health Partnership makes it clear that “significant changes” are needed in the way services are delivered. The development of midwife-led units, either alongside obstetric units or on a standalone basis, is recommended in the study.A system of centralised booking for expectant mothers, which would see women directed to the appropriate centre for care “based on admission criteria”, as well as the rotation of staff through each area, are also recommended.Fianna Fáil health spokesman Marc MacSharry, who raised the issue in the Seanad yesterday, said the report confirmed that the HSE was strongly considering dramatically downgrading maternity services.“There are reports that plans are already under way to shut down the maternity unit at Portiuncula as soon as the local and European elections are over, and transfer patients to University Hospital Galway, ” he said. “For the Government to keep this major change to our local health services a secret until after polling day is deeply cynical and deeply unfair to expectant mothers who are due their babies at Portiuncula very soon. “If these plans go ahead, it would amount to a major downgrading of obstetrician-led maternity services in this region. first_imgIn the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa, residents of El Hierro are only a few months away from weaning themselves completely from fossil fuels for the generation of electricity. They will rely instead on a $110 million renewable energy system that uses both wind turbines and hydroelectric generation.According to reports from National Public Radio and Thomasnet, the Spanish island will be able to forego the importation of 40,000 barrels of oil a year to power generators.The new system, which NPR said was inaugurated this summer, will be able to generate as much as 48 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to supply all of the island’s needs. It is to become fully functional by the end of the year. Using both wind and hydroThe system includes five wind turbines and a closed-loop hydro system consisting of two reservoirs. When there’s enough wind, the turbines take care of the electrical demand from the island’s 11,000 or so residents and tourists. Excess electricity is used to pump water from a reservoir at sea level to a volcanic crater 2,300 feet up the hill.When the wind dies, the water from the upper reservoir is released. It travels through generators to produce electricity on its way down to the lower reservoir. The system switches from one source or electricity to the other so quickly that residents won’t know the difference.There’s nothing new about either technology, but the system installed on El Hierro is the first that combines the two, engineer Juan Manuel Quintero, who serves on the board of the Gorona del Viento (Wind Gorona) plant, told NRP.“The wind machines, we basically ordered out of a catalog,” he told NPR. “We didn’t invent the technology. Same with the water turbines. The innovation we made is hooking up the two systems together.”The earlier Thomasnet article, originally posted in 2011, says the five-turbine wind farm would have a capacity of 11.5 megawatts, with the hydro project contributing anther 11.3 MW. In Weyl semimetals, however, the electrons near the Weyl points form quasiparticles that, in a magnetic field, can contribute to heat conduction without transporting charge [1, 2]. In their paper published in the journal Physical Review Letters, Zhida Song and Xi Dai describe their experiments with Weyl semimetals and what they found. © 2019 Science X Network , arXiv Weyl semimetals have only recently been discovered, though they were predicted to exist in 1929 by Herman Weyl. They are topological materials in which electronic excitations exhibit massless behavior. Prior research has shown that fermions that adhere to Weyl’s theorem exist as quasiparticles in some solids—those that have electron energy bands that cross at points close to the Fermi energy. Notably, they behave differently than electrons in metals—they exhibit the chiral magnetic effect. This effect is observed when a Weyl metal is exposed to a magnetic field—a current is generated where positive and negative particles move in parallel and anti-parallel to the magnetic field. In such situations, the flow of current is zero because the particles cancel each other out. This changes, however, when the semimetal is placed in a parallel electric current resulting in a quasiparticle flow—an effect known as the chiral anomaly. In this new effort, Song and Dai have shown that the chiral magnetic effect can also lead to a phenomenon called the chiral zero sound (CZS), a newly discovered heat transport mechanism that can be seen in Weyl semimetals. Zero sound comes about due to vibrations, but it is carried by the momentum distribution of electrons when they exist near the Fermi Level. The study reports that they have existed all along, occurring when researchers place a Weyl semimetal in a magnetic field—now, the researchers have observed them in action. They report that the effect contributes to the thermal conductivity of such materials. They also note that its velocity can be modulated by altering the magnetic field. And they note that the effect can be measured using a variety of techniques, such as employing pump and probe. They describe their discovery as a “completely new sound mode carried by Weyl fermions under a magnetic field.”last_img read more
