OSU won, 3-1.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorThe team that ended the Ohio State men’s volleyball team 2012-13 campaign could be the one who the Buckeyes get their season back on track against. The No. 14 Buckeyes (5-6, 2-2) are set to host Grand Canyon as they continue their five-match homestand at St. John Arena. The Antelopes (6-7) defeated OSU, 3-2, in a Men’s Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Quarterfinal match that ended its season. A chance at revenge lies with the Buckeyes, with two matches against the Antelopes slated to start at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.“They’re a strong team with a lot of returners so I expect them to play really well together,” junior outside hitter Michael Henchy said. “Last time we played them, we lost in five sets and no one has forgotten that. It’s going to be a fun match to play in.”In the last meeting between the two teams, OSU led 2-1 after three sets, but Grand Canyon stormed back to win the final two and take the match.“They came out with a lot of fire and played like they had nothing to lose and ended up beating us. Everyone was in shock at the outcome of the game and it was because we took them very lightly. We can’t let that happen again,” senior middle blocker Jonathan Newton said.OSU is preparing to start off strong against Grand Canyon and hopefully take early control of the match. Newton said the Buckeyes can’t underestimate Grand Canyon like they did previously.“They are going to come out and put up a good fight. If we let them get an early jump on us then we could be in trouble. We will be able to control the game if we stop their momentum from the beginning,” Newton said. After taking some time to get some rest away from the gym this past Sunday and Monday, Newton said the Buckeyes have been working on themselves this week, instead of worrying about what the other team is going to bring to the court.“This game has a lot to do with how Ohio State plays. If we can focus on our side of the net and bring a lot of energy, then it’s going to be hard for any team to beat us in our home gym,” Newton said.OSU coach Pete Hanson said the Buckeyes will do what they can to prevent a repeat of last season’s tournament loss.“We have continued to become better as a unit and not to mention, our returning guys have a little bit of an edge to them, because of what happened last year in the playoffs. We are ready to send the message that it is not going to happen again, especially in St. John Arena,” Hanson said. read more

first_imgParis Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva warned his teammates that Manchester United are always “dangerous” ahead of their Champions League showdown next yearFollowing Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to rivals Liverpool, manager Jose Mourinho was removed from his post with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being brought to succeed the Portuguese on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. This came after United’s worst start to a season in 28 years with the club down in sixth-place in the Premier League and 11 points behind Chelsea in the final top-four spot. However, Silva believes PSG would be unwise to take United for granted under the relatively unproven Solskjaer – who has never coached a major European club before.“United, it is always a dangerous team,” said Silva, according to Goal. “Under Mourinho, I think they could have done better.Colin Dagba, France,How Dagba become one of PSG’s regulars Manuel R. first_imgCPI (M), undoubtedly the most dominant political party in Kerala, faced a colossal fall in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) managed only one out of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state, and interestingly, most of their defeats were with a margin of more than 1 lakh votes. The unexpected defeat and the considerable reduction in vote share have already pulled the Pinarayi Vijayan government to a state of defence, and political experts believe that this is just the beginning, and what awaits the LDF is more challenging days where they will face strong threats from both UDF and NDA.So, what worked against LDF, especially CPI (M) in this Lok Sabha elections. International Business Times, India present you the five factors that led to CPI (M) colossal fall. The arrogance of top leaders who already forgot the values of MarxismPeople in Kerala, especially those who live in the northern region of the state, have an affinity towards left for ages. However, when we analyse the recent election results, CPI (M) has lost a majority of votes from these areas. In Pinarayi Vijayan’s legislative Assembly too, CPI (M) faced a lethal fall, and as per reports, they lost 10 per cent of the votes when compared to last elections. So, what made CPI (M) lose their popularity in these regions? The answer is very simple – the arrogance of top leaders, especially while facing the media has played a crucial role in putting the party under a bad light. It should be noted that Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI (M)’s face in Kerala, has insulted journalists multiple times, and videos of those incidents went viral on online spaces. In this era of social media and independent journalism, clips like these have the potential to create a negative wave among the general public who hold a neutral mindset.Citing another example, Remya Haridas, the winner of Alathur constituency, was a very unfamiliar name when Congress announced her candidature. However, she became an acceptable face among the general public when LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan, and so-called intellectuals like Deepa Nishanth made derogatory comments against the Congress candidate.Glorification of political murdersThe performance of CPI (M) leaders in various news channel’s prime time debate shows have also negatively impacted the party’s run in this year’s election. CPI (M) leaders like AN Shamseer, Mohammed Riyaz, and Aanathalavattam Aanandhan have several times justified the political killings allegedly carried out by the party in the state, and this shameless glorification of bloodshed has made many believe that CPI (M) is a party that supports violence.Minority appeasement and Sabarimala issueCPI (M) is a party that is known for secular ideologies and socialistic values. However, in the past few years, the party has shown visible minority appeasement, and luckily, their appeasement agenda worked well for them in the previous elections. However, after the Sabarimala issue, things took a new turn, and CPI (M)’s hurry to allow women in the temple made many people believe that the party is against religious practices.Even people in the minority category also considered CPI (M)’s move not suitable in a country where religious beliefs are protected. Political experts believe that Christians and Muslims were also worried about Sabarimala issues as they thought that the next targets will be churches and mosques.Wrong selection of candidatesEven though promising parliamentarians like MB Rajesh lost the polls in a narrow margin, political experts claim that the party has made some wrong selections while choosing candidates in various constituencies. Even people with below average political literacy were well aware that candidates like Innocent (Chalakkudy) and PV Anwar (Ponnani) will surely fail in the elections. Party’s decision to nominate reigning MLAs as candidates in Lok Sabha elections also worked against CPI (M).Kerala’s strong stand against BJPPeople in Kerala have a secular mindset, and they have always tried to stay away from the Hindutva politics put forward by the BJP, controlled by RSS in disguise. Most of the voters in Kerala wanted to see the fall of BJP, and they believed that the only alternative for the ruling party will be Congress.Keralites are well aware that CPI (M) has already lost grounds in West Bengal and Tripura, and this makes the party incapable to do anything in Lok Sabha. To get a better government, and if not, a strong opposition, Keralites decided to choose Congress.[The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author’s and do not reflect that of International Business Times, India]last_img read more

first_imgContradicting common perception, researchers have found that low levels of vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin”, does not cause or worsen sleep apnea.Sleep apnea causes repeated awakenings and pauses in breathing during the night. Obesity appears to contribute to the adverse effects.“The link between obesity and vitamin D deficiency can be explained a number of ways, one of which is that obese individuals are less likely to be physically active, thereby limiting their sun exposure,” said senior investigator Ken Kunisaki, associate professor of medicine at University of Minnesota in the US. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’“Although our study was not designed to figure out why obese people have lower vitamin D levels, our results ultimately suggest that low vitamin D levels do not cause or worsen sleep apnea,” Kunisaki said. The study involved a cohort of 2,827 participants who were generally healthy and elderly males with average age 76.4 years. “Taking additional vitamin D supplements is not likely to prevent or improve sleep apnea,” Kunisaki said. The researchers also found no evidence to support a link between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of sleep apnea in non-obese study participants. The study appeared in the journal Annals of the American Thoracic Society.last_img read more

first_img State Rep. Shane Hernandez has introduced legislation to clarify Michigan law and protect local charities from unnecessary harassment.Hernandez, R-Port Huron, sponsored a bill to allow charitable organizations to continue longstanding practices of collecting money in public roadways under strict guidelines.“What we’re attempting to do is simply remove laws from the books which are often ignored anyway,” Hernandez said.  “I want to thank Senator Phil Pavlov for helping bring this issue to my attention.  His request for an Attorney General opinion really helped us pinpoint the problem which we are trying to fix.”Under the legislation, anyone wishing to solicit funds on or near Michigan roads would have to be doing so for a charitable or civic organization.  They could do so only during daylight hours, and must maintain at least $500,000 of personal liability insurance in order to protect local municipalities from potential lawsuits.“In the communities I represent, local fire departments, police departments, and charitable organizations really depend on fundraising drives to help pay for important programs for the community,” Hernandez said. “As a lawmaker, I believe in eliminating unnecessary and often unenforced regulations whenever possible.”### 02Feb Rep. first_imgStéphane RichardOrange CEO Stéphane Richard has hit out at the European Commission for what he sees as its obsession with antitrust rules aimed at curbing the power of former incumbent telcos.Richard, speaking to French daily Le Figaro in the wake of the recent raids on the offices of several large European telcos including Orange as part of an investigation into whether the telecos are restricting access to the internet to companies that offer services using large amounts of data, said that, for the last 20 years, Brussels has only know how to do one thing – antitrust regulation. In an interview with the paper, Richard said that Brussels seemed not to have realised that the world had changed from the days of monopoly incumbent telcos and that operators now worked in an ultracompetitive world that was seeing prices fall at the same time as operators were investing heavily in network infrastructure. The EC’s interest in Orange’s practices followed allegations by US bandwidth provider Cogent Communications that Orange was restricting access to its content by privileging the traffic of its subsidiary Dailymotion over that of YouTube. Richard described the allegation as “false and grotesque” and questioned Cogent’s business practices, which he said were based on non-payment for networks that it used massively. Until last year, when the site was shut down, one of Cogent’s key customers was Megaupload, which directed users to pirated content.Richard also attacked plans by EC vice-president Neelie Kroes to eliminate roaming charges for mobile services, which he said would cost Orange €300 million a year in lost profits. He said he welcomed plans to create a single telecoms market but that this remained for the moment a distant prospect, and called for a moratorium on lowering roaming prices until a full study on their economic impact was made.Richard also criticised what he saw as favourable treatment of cable operators, who he said are expanding their fibre networks without the same obligation to open up to competitors that is placed on telcos.last_img read more

first_imgFolllowing its surprise win of rights to top-tier French football earlier this week, Spanish broadcaster Mediapro has outlined plans to launch a dedicated football channel and has stated that it is open to striking deals with third-party operators, including current rightsholder Canal+.The French professional football league (LFP) secured a record €1.15 billion per season for its key rights, with Mediapro taking three of the seven packages on offer, including lots 1 and 2, comprising the top 10 matches and a choice of 28 further matches, and Friday evening and Saturday’s 17:00 matches respectively. The Catalan-based broadcaster and producere also secured Lot 4, including Sunday early afternoon matches and four matches from 15:00 on Sundays.Mediapro president Jaume Roures yesterday told journalists in Paris that his goal was to build a channel to be sold at a price that could attract an audience base of around five million subscribers within two years. With three million subscribers, he added, it could be possible to set a price of around €25 a month, taking into account estimated production costs of between €12 million and €15 million per season.Roures said that he hoped former rightsholder Canal+ will carry the channel Mediapro plans to launch in France for Ligue 1 and added that there is no reason for subscribers to abandon the platform. He said he planned to hold talks with all French operators and intimated that one possibility would be to come to some sort of reciprocal arrangement with Altice France/SFR, which holds the rights to Champions League football but which did not participate in the Ligue 1 auction.Roures also indicated that Mediapro has not given up on its attempt to become a key player in Italian Serie A football. Italy’s football league this week agreed to annul its award of Serie A rights to Spanish broadcaster Mediapro after it said the latter had failed to provide necessary guarantees. At the press conference, Roures said that the case in Italy is not yet closed, pointing out that the group has until June 7 to make a financial guarantee. He also indicated that Mediapro may look to seek to expand its portfolio of rights with other football leagues.French industry observers have expressed doubt about how easy it will be for Mediapro to secure a return on its investment, pointing to the fact that BeIN Sport France is still not profitable after holding rights to French football for a number of years.Following the initial announcement from the LFP, Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada was quick to express doubts about whether Mediapro will be able to recoup its investment – a spend that Saada believes does not make sense, even though Ligue 1 has long been considered underpriced relative to its European peers.Saada indicated that he was interested in sub-licensing the rights. In a letter to employees on Wednesday – and ahead of Mediapro’s press conference yesterday – he said that to “overpay for sports rights in the face of all economic logic is not a viable solution” but noted that the LFP auction “authorises, for the first time, the awardees to cede all or part of their rights, and thus opens the possibility for Canal+ to win them back indirectly”.The loss of football rights has also raised concerns about the sustainability of the current financial model of France’s cinema industry, which is subsidised to a significant extent by the pay TV operator.Following the announcement from the LFP, culture minister Françcoise Nyssen said that a viable economic model for Canal+ was viatal for financing the country’s film business and audiovisual content creation in general.Canal+ CEO Saada has also attempted to offer reassurance on this front, arguing that none of the pay TV operator’s customers took the service for football alone, and many only watch a match occasionally. He said that cinema and series were at the core of the operator’s offering.last_img read more
