Gibson, after he failed on numerous occasions to produce Mrs. Mai Urey’s driver, Joseph Kundufurmah, who damaged a businessman’s vehicle valued at US$18,000.Cllr. Gibson may be arrested on Thursday, June 14, if he does not produce Kundufurmah, the court said during a hearing. At Monday’s hearing, which Cllr. Gibson and Kundufurmah did not attend, Judge Jomah Jallah said, “If Cllr. Gibson cannot produce defendant Kundufurmah by Thursday, he would take all of the punishments that would have been taken by Kundufurmah, because he guaranteed to serve as surety for him.”The court’s decision resulted from a writ of contempt issued by Judge Jomah S. Jallah, after Gibson had refused on numerous occasions to bring Kundufurmah to court as he had promised. The court authorized its sheriff to proceed to the premises of defendant Gibson, to ensure he appears before it on Thursday, June 14, “to show cause why he should not be held in contempt for failing to produce  defendant Kundufurmah predicated upon a notice of assignment served and returned out of this court.”Before the court action, Cllr. Gibson on June 11 wrote the court informing it about his decision to discontinue his representation of defendant Kundufurmah. In that letter, he informed Judge Jallah that his resignation from the case stemmed from numerous calls he had made to the defendant, which he claimed Kundufurmah had refused to answer or return same.“I am not aware of the location or whereabouts of defendant Kundufurmah; hence, I cannot provide legal representation for a defendant who has elected not to avail himself to his legal counsel,” Gibson said in his letter.Kundufurmah, Mrs. Urey’s driver, was involved in an accident with a White Lexus Jeep valued at US$18,000 and that he severely damaged. The vehicle in question reportedly belongs to one Success Tewobola, a businessman. The accident, police investigative report indicates, occurred on October 9, 2017, along the Tubman Boulevard, opposite the ERA Supermarket in Sinkor. The case grew out of a police second investigative report on May 9, 2018, charging Kundufurmah with multiple traffic-related offenses that included misused of a lane, reckless driving, improper left turn and failure to yield to the right of way, resulting into the damage of the white Lexus Jeep.Following the release of the first police report, Mrs. Urey rejected the findings and subsequently asked for another investigative report, which was done but again held her driver Kundufurmah responsible for the accident.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgRemember the movie American Desi? And even more specifically the song Aap Jaisa Koi that had a boy crooning the lyrics of the hit Bolly number with a spectacular acapella touch to it?We are talking about Penn Masala — the acapella band from the University of Pennsylvania that has music lovers paying them good attention as they render interesting mash-ups of Bollywood and international songs with their own signature touch. And guess what, they are on their second India tour and their last stop is Delhi. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Talking history, Penn Masala was started by four students in 1996 in the university. The inspiration came from the eclectic mix of music these students grew up on. Bollywood, south Asian tracks and influences merged with international strains and found place in acapella sounds, and there was Penn Masala, says current president Sam Levenson. What started in 1996 and found shape through seven albums (Awaaz, 11 PM Soundcheck, The Brown Album, Pehchaan, On Detours, Panoramic Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with Netflix and the compilation album Out of Stock) that included some strong original compositions is now in its 13th year and counting. Every year, singers graduate and new talent is brought in. Levenson joined Penn Masala in 2009 as a fresher and is now in his senior year and as he says — there is no looking back. And do the alumni ever come together? Of course they do, says Levenson. Every fall the old students come together to pass on the Penn Masala history to the freshers, and there are informal meets around the year. Once singers graduate, they get busy with the non-musical part of their careers, adds Levenson, but they are always there to support the team. Speaking about the alumni, Levenson points out that quite a few old Penn Masala members are in Delhi and they are all coming in for the 11 January performance. Back in India after 2009, Penn Masala has already performed in Mumbai and Pune, there are two more cities on the cards before Delhi becomes the last stop on this tour. While Mumbai had almost 700 people attending their show, Pune was more fun, says Levenson. The crowd, the ambience, the vibe and the sound system was wonderful, he points out. ‘Delhi gave us an energetic crowd three years back and we expect a big show this time around as well,’ he adds.So what is their modus operandi this time around? They have tied up with Teach for India campaign and have already given a few schools a taste of their music skills and they hope to extend the collaboration over this year working on mutual promotions and fund-raising events. Penn Masala is also hoping to tie up with media houses like they did last year to create an Independance Day music video on Maa Tujhe Salaam. They have also started work on their music video. And the icing on 2013 is their eighth album that is all set for a March release. What next for the band? Bollywood, pat comes the reply. ‘We want to work with artistes who have inspired the Penn Masala kind of music,’ says Levenson. first_img This story originally appeared on Reuters Register Now » Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Samsung Electronics Co Ltd aims to use its $56 billion cash pile to fund growth including acquisitions, the tech giant’s investor relations chief said, even as more shareholders clamor for bigger dividends. While the South Korean company’s profit declined in 2014 for the first time in three years as its lead in smartphones was challenged by Apple Inc, investors were cheered by a 40 percent dividend boost and its first share buyback since 2007.But Robert Yi, Samsung’s head of investor relations, signaled that shareholders should not expect the same in 2015 as the company keeps its focus on growth.”Dividends and other forms of shareholder returns are responsibilities that the company has for shareholders, so we will make efforts to meet them. But our primary objective is growth and that is what we are communicating to our shareholders,” Yi told Reuters in an interview.Samsung has become an increasingly active shopper, striking 10 deals in two years. Even so, its purchases have been small, prompting calls from some investors for bigger deals to revive growth momentum.”We are primarily focused on M&A deals for companies that would be good fits to Samsung’s current businesses, and we believe that know-how and experience accrued from such transactions will make bigger M&A deals possible going forward,” Yi said.Samsung Electronics held cash of 61.8 trillion won ($56.14 billion) at the end of 2014.Yi said more value fund managers had bought Samsung shares over the past year as its share price and earnings declined.”Their main interest is to increase long-term value through shareholder returns policies, so they have been calling for more dividends and share buybacks,” he said.Yi declined to comment specifically on plans for buybacks or dividends. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Feb. 10 that Samsung would probably pay out less this year than in 2014.South Korean companies are notoriously parsimonious when it comes to dividends. Seoul-listed shares tend to trade at discounts to peers.Yi said Samsung planned to strengthen shareholder outreach, making top management more available to institutional investors and holding more public events. It also wanted to boost investment by foreign retail investors to help build consumer loyalty. Samsung, which does not have American Depositary Receipts, in 2013 arranged a program with Bank of America Merrill Lynch that allows U.S. retail investors to invest directly in its shares. Samsung declined to comment on how many investors acquired its stock through the program.Samsung shares fell to multi-year lows in October but have recovered and were up 3.8 percent in 2015 based on Tuesday’s closing level.($1 = 1,100.8700 won)(Editing by Tony Munroe and Stephen Coates) 3 min read Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.
