first_imgParis: Trains were slowed down and holidaymakers flocked to swimming pools, beaches and lakes in western Europe on Wednesday as another heatwave set new temperature records. A host of French cities saw their highest levels since records began on Tuesday, with wine capital Bordeaux recording 41.2 degrees Celsius (106.16 Fahrenheit), beating the previous high of 40.7C registered in August 2003, weather service Meteo-France said. Forecasters predicted new temperature highs in neighbouring countries Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands, where the mercury could beat the previous record of 38.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, according to the Dutch weather office. Britain’s Met Office has said there is a chance that the UK temperature record of 38.5 degrees Celsius, which was recorded in Faversham, Kent, in August 2004, will also be exceeded on Thursday at the peak of the heat. The operator of the British rail network, Network Rail, said it was slowing down trains in response to the extreme weather, which comes only weeks after another record-breaking heatwave in Europe in June. We slow down services to keep passengers safe when this happens,” the company said on Twitter. Across the area affected by the unusually high heat, stretching from France up to Norway in the north, people sought out ways to cool off in lakes and rivers, leading to an increase in drowning incidents. In London, police were searching for three people who have gone missing in the River Thames while swimming. France’s weather office said the scorching conditions “require particular care, notably for vulnerable or exposed people” with almost the entire country under an orange-level weather alert, the second highest level.last_img read more

first_imgCOPENHAGEN – A ferry with around 300 people on board was stranded in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday after the ship’s engine failed, the Danish operator said. No injuries were reported and an evacuation wasn’t immediately necessary. The breakdown aboard the Regina Seaways produced smoke, which triggered the ship’s fire extinguishing system in the engine room, Copenhagen-based DFDS Seaways said. The vessel was in international waters off Kaliningrad, Russia’s Baltic Sea exclave between Poland and Lithuania.“We are talking about a malfunction in the engine room that caused a lot of smoke,” DFDS spokesman Gert Jakobsen told The Associated Press. “Right now we are inspecting the engine room to find out whether the ship can sail on its own or needs to be tugged.”He said passengers had assembled at muster stations in preparation for a possible evacuation, but the “situation is under control.”The ferry, which also had cars and trucks on board, was travelling from Kiel, Germany to Klaipeda, Lithuania’s port city north of Kaliningrad. The crossing, one of DFDS’ many in the Baltic Sea region, normally takes about 20 hours.“On these kinds of crossings we have people from Germany, the Baltic countries and Russia. We cannot say now who was onboard,” Jakobsen said. The ship is about 85 kilometres (50 miles) from Klaipeda, said Vaidas Klumbys, another DFDS spokesman. He said that on Tuesday afternoon “we received the information from the ship that it was undergoing vibrations and smoke rising from the engines.”Russian state news agency Tass quoted Andrei Permyakov, head of the sea rescue co-ordinationcentre in Kaliningrad, as saying that rescuers from Lithuania, Russia and Poland responded.Lithuania’s navy said one of its helicopters and three navy vessels were sent to the site in case an evacuation was necessary. The regional news agency, Baltic News Services, quoted Klumbys as saying “the weather conditions are not good.”Forecasts for the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea said there were gale force winds, rain showers, poor visibility and risk of thunder storms in the region.Jakobsen wasn’t aware of any rescue operation, saying there was no evacuation.“But in this kind of situation, everyone steps in,” he said. The Regina Seaways was built in 2010 and can carry up to 500 passengers.___David Keyton in Stockholm, Liudas Dapkus in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Jim Heintz in Moscow, contributed to this story.___A previous version of this story was corrected to show that Kiel is in Germany, not Lithuania.last_img read more

The accused had got the new arms license of a .32 bore revolver a couple of months back. Even as the model code of conduct imposed for the Lok Sabha polls since March 11 required every licensed weapon to be deposited with the police station concerned, he was still possessing his arms, which he used to commit the crime. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has directed Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta to ensure speedy probe into the killing of Shorie. The chief minister ordered prompt investigation into the matter and ensured that the accused will be given exemplary punishment. He said that no one would be allowed to interfere or intimidate any public servant in the discharge of their duties. OSU players return to the field after halftime in the Orange Bowl against Clemson at Sun Life Stadium Jan. 3. OSU lost 40-35. Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorMIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — This wasn’t how it was supposed to end.As Clemson redshirt-senior quarterback Tajh Boyd took a knee to run out the clock in the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl — signaling his team’s 40-35 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes (12-2, 8-1) — a harsh reality was setting in for OSU seniors.Despite winning 24 straight games under coach Urban Meyer, the 2013 senior class has no postseason victories to their name, unless they were redshirted during their Buckeye career and were thus a part of the team of 2010 Rose Bowl champions.Between a loss in the Orange Bowl this season, a bowl ban in 2012-13 season, falling short in the 2012 Gator Bowl and getting the 2011 Sugar Bowl win vacated, something will always be missing from a group that had championship expectations.“It’s always going to be hard. My college career did not end the way I thought it would or I wanted it to,” redshirt-senior left tackle Jack Mewhort said following the loss to the Tigers (11-2, 7-1).Regardless of the team’s postseason shortcomings in recent years, that’s not how Mewhort and company want to be remembered.“I think we’re very resilient. I think we’re hard workers, good people. Good football players, even better people,” Mewhort said. “I’d like to take that to be the legacy. Obviously we dropped a few tough ones here at the end. We would have liked to go out on top, but I think we set a standard for these younger guys.”From the depths of a 6-7 season in 2011 capped with the Gator Bowl loss to Florida, this year’s class of seniors will be remembered fondly by its head coach even though the group fell short in this season’s biggest games.“Senior class, we just said an emotional goodbye to them,” Meyer said after the Orange Bowl loss. “It’s not because they’re seniors, it’s because of what they’ve done. I tried to make that perfectly clear. Just because you stay some place for a couple years doesn’t mean you deserve that respect. It’s what you did, and how you did it.”The seniors on the offensive side of the ball turned in a record-setting season in their last year at OSU, setting school records for points (637), points per game (45.5), yards per game (512.0), passing touchdowns (38), first downs (361) and rushing yards (4,321).The Buckeyes had chances to win both postseason games late, but ultimately fell short. It is that unwillingness to give up that sets them apart, senior wide receiver Corey “Philly” Brown said after the loss to the Tigers.“(We have) great leadership, especially the senior class. It’s a tough football team. A team that will never give up,” Brown said. When Meyer’s reign began in 2012, a change in the culture came along with it, something Mewhort said was not an easy adjustment.“I know it looks like immediately the next season after going 6-7 we came back and go 12-0, but it was not immediate — at all,” Mewhort said. “It started at 5 a.m. in January of last year. Every day we came to work and we grinded hard.”Aside for Ryan Shazier — who declared for the NFL Draft Saturday — OSU will be leaning on juniors like quarterback Braxton Miller, tight end Jeff Heuerman, defensive lineman Michael Bennett and wide receivers Devin Smith and Evan Spencer in 2014 to follow in the footsteps of a class who Meyer thinks has a bright future.“It will be great. A student-athlete at Ohio State University, (will) get a great degree, and go on and build for the future,” Meyer said. “It’s going to sting for a while, probably a long while, because we just didn’t finish, and it was right there to finish.“This year’s senior class … When I looked around the room, every one of them could impact that play. And that’s the sign of a decent senior class.”No matter how it ended, Mewhort said being remembered for getting the program “back to where Ohio State should be” is the most important thing.“Talking about the last two games, obviously we would have liked to come out on top of those but I think our seniors did a good job of setting the template of how to come to work every day,” Mewhort said. “Do things the right way on and off the field. Hopefully we’ll be remembered for that.” read more

So is not rotating, because rotating looks like a player plays against Bournemouth to give a rest to somebody that is going to play against Spurs in the semi-final.” “So the word is not rotation, it is an opportunity for people, for some people to play and to try to get a place in the team for Spurs. first_imgKolkata: State Education minister Partha Chatterjee on Thursday raised questions over the evaluation of the answer scripts of History in the wake of a number of students who had scored 90 percent or above in Higher Secondary or its equivalent examinations getting less than 10 in the entrance test at Jadavpur University.”A number of students have approached me in the past few days who have secured less than 5 in the entrance examinations at JU. These students have bagged more than 80 percent or even 90 percent marks in History in the Board examinations. Even Granthan Sengupta, who came first in Higher Secondary examination, is among the students who have secured poor marks in JU’s History entrance test. Have the answer scripts been examined properly,” the minister questioned. He, who has always claimed that admission should be strictly on the basis of merit, was critical against a section of students who had agitated in the varsity demanding admission test for a number of days last month. “Now, I will ask those students who had agitated whether there has been transparency in the evaluation of the answer scripts in the entrance examination,” Chatterjee said.JU decided on Thursday that Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das will be acting as the Chairman of the admission committee of Jadavpur University and a fresh review of the History answer scripts will be conducted. Registrar Chiranjib Bhattacharjee will assist the V-C. The decision was taken after Dean of Arts Subhasish Biswas wrote to Vice-Chancellor Das praying resignation.”I strongly declare that the entire crisis which has taken place in the admission procedure of BA admission test in History of JU is due to my negligence of work and I am solely responsible for that… In the case of admission test in History, I detected an uneven marking after receiving many complaints,” Biswas’ self-declaration stated.A senior JU administrative official said Biswas’ resignation from the post of Dean of Arts has been accepted and he will no longer be involved in the admission process. “He is also the head of the History department. His resignation from this post is still under consideration,” the official added.A section of students had been demanding the resignation of Biswas in the wake of this crisis and had gheraoed Das and some other senior administrative officials on Wednesday. It was lifted in the wee hours on Thursday after Biswas tendered his resignation. The admission in the Arts subjects like International Relations, Bengali and English went off peacefully on Thursday with the majority of the seats getting occupied.last_img read more
