first_img10 February 2014South Africa’s George Coetzee captured his first European Tour title on Sunday when he lifted the Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club. Before the event, which is co-santioned by the Sunshine Tour, Coetzee had recorded 24 top-10 finishes, but on the 25th occasion he made sure of victory, winning by three shots on 19-under-par 268 after closing with a six-under-par 66.‘You need a little bit of luck’“You need a little bit of luck to win these things,” he told the Sunshine Tour website afterwards.“On 15 I pulled my driver and that was the decider, because it should have gone into the water, but instead it hit a tree and bounced back into the fairway.“You always have this plan in mind for yourself when you’re coming down the stretch and it never goes the way you think it will. I’m very happy to have finished the job,” he said.‘You need a little bit of luck’With the Joburg Open serving as qualifying event for the new Open Qualifying Series, Coetzee also secured a place at this year’s Open Championship, which takes place at Royal Liverpool in July.Fellow South African Justin Walters and South Korea’s Jin Jeong shared second place with Tyrell Hutton on 16-under-par 271 and were also rewarded with guaranteed places at The Open. Hutton missed out based on his world ranking.Interviewed on Radio 702 on Monday morning, Coetzee said he hoped his victory would lead to him receiving an invitation to play in the Nedbank Golf Challenge. He also said he looked forward to contesting the Volvo Golf Champions, which is open to winners of European Tour events during the season, and to those players that have won 10 or more European Tour titles in their careers.World rankingHis victory lifted him from 73rd in the Official World Golf Rankings up to 59th place, behind only Charl Schwartzel (18), Louis Oosthuizen (34), Ernie Els (35), and Branden Grace (47).Coetzee’s victory was the sixth by a South African in the eight years the tournament has been held. He succeeded Richard Sterne as champion.‘Mixed emotions’Walters was tied for the lead after three rounds with Thomas Aiken on 17-under-par and admitted he had mixed emotions after finishing second. “[At the] beginning of the week if you gave me second place, I would have put my feet up and taken it, but given the situation I’m a little disappointed,” Walters said.“It’s bittersweet, though, because I’ve earned a place at The Open and that’s the major we’ve all dreamed of playing in since we were kids.”The European Tour next moves to the East London Golf Club for the Africa Open, which it co-sanctions with the Sunshine Tour. The event tees off on Thursday, 13 February.LEADERBOARDGeorge Coetzee (RSA) 268 (-19) 65, 68, 69, 66Tyrell Hatton (Eng) 271 (-16) 67, 69, 69, 66Jin Jeong (Kor) 271 (-16) 65, 69, 66, 71Justin Walters (RSA) 271 (-16) 64, 70, 64, 73Andy Sullivan (Eng) 272 (-15) 66, 72, 69, 65Alvaro Quiros (Esp) 272 (-15) 69, 68, 69, 66Matthew Baldwin 272 (-15) 68, 69, 68, 67Thomas Aiken (RSA) 272 (-15) 70, 65, 53, 74Danie van Tonder (RSA) 273 (-14) 65, 72, 69, 67Seve Benson (Eng) 274 (-13) 68, 68, 70, 68Ross Fisher (Eng) 274 (-13) 69, 69, 68, 68Robert-Jan Derksen (Ned) 274 (-13) 65, 74, 67, 68Anthony Wall (Eng) 274 (-13) 60, 70, 66, 69David Horsey (Eng) 274 (-13) 70, 63, 70, 71Roope Kakko (Fin) 274 (-13) 70, 64, 67, 73last_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Over the weekend we got two inches spread out over three days with no flooding and no ponding. It was an awesome rain. I think it will almost complete the corn and I think the beans are really soaking it up. We were really dry with all of the 90-degree heat. That rain was really a blessing. That is a money rain. It has been a good year with good timely rains.I hope the heat didn’t hurt us too much. I have some concerns with pollination. The corn looks tremendous, but did those 90-degree temperatures shave off of the top end yield? I think it might have but I think this will still be a really good corn crop. We’ve got gray leaf spot in the corn in some hybrids. I chose not to spray the corn for two reasons. One, I am hoping that corn is far enough along that it won’t be too yield damaging. Then I kind of thought that we missed the optimum date to spray the corn.In soybeans we have quite a bit of frogeye leaf spot. We sprayed over half of our soybean acres with fungicides. This is the first time I have sprayed for frogeye. The double-crops look as good as I’ve ever had. They came up and they had good heat and moisture and, with another two inches of rain on them, they look awesome. We’ve sprayed all of our beans with the herbicide and the only thing left we have to spray is the double-crop beans. We put a lot of compost down and we deep-tilled our wheat ground because we’d had some flooding on it. We worked that up, got the rain on it and I’m picking the cover crop up today to plant as soon as it is dried down and ready to go.We plant early soybean varieties to get the wheat planted as soon as possible. If you get your wheat in on time around the first of October it corresponds to good wheat yields. And we have gone with early- to mid-season wheat to get the wheat crop off, get the double-crops in and some of the early cover crops planted. We tend to lean toward early- to mid- wheat varieties.I hope everyone got a good bit of early contracting done. I don’t see much changing in the markets now before harvest. Hopefully we can harvest a good crop, store it and see what happens next year.last_img read more

first_imgA new study commissioned by the European Union has finally proven what many have suspected all along: internet users don’t want to pay for content. Period. And nothing is going to change their minds. The report finds, in a surprising contradiction to what industry executives have been spouting for ages, consumers’ behavior has nothing to do with the peer-to-peer technology (P2P) that has given rise to all-you-can-eat systems for free downloads of copyrighted content. In fact, many people claim that they wouldn’t pay for online content even if all other free options were taken away. This finding has dramatic implications for the future of business, and not just in the entertainment industry, either. If people won’t pay for content, how will companies survive? The answer to this question is simple, but the actual solutions are hard. It’s clear that new business models are needed when it comes to online content, but what should these new models look like? How should they work? No one really seems to know yet. Who Pays, Who Doesn’t The European Commission’s Digital Competitiveness Report (PDF) is a comprehensive annual resource which looks at everything from broadband penetration to use of social networks and more. One of the chapters in the latest report, published earlier this month, deals specifically with online entertainment. In this chapter, the EU study reports on the state of the online entertainment industry, revealing factoids like “less than 5% of Europeans have paid for online content in the last three months.” The most interesting results from the report, though, are not the details about who pays, but about who doesn’t. Among the non-payers, factors like lower prices would convince about 30% to pay while things like better quality, wider choice, better availability, and others would convince between 15-20%. Yet one figure stands out: only around 20% of online users would pay for online content if all the other free options suddenly disappeared.Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Not to Blame, Says EU The impact of this finding didn’t escape the notice of the EU researchers, who go on to point out that this seems to mean, contrary to what industry execs say, illegal copying is not to blame:“…the low percentage of individuals that consider the possible lack of freely available online content as a reason for paying, calls into question the argument put forward by representatives of the content industry that European consumers will in the long term suffer from a lack of commercial availability of high quality content if the current model of audiovisual content distribution, based on illegal copying, is not curved.”Instead, what seems to be happening is that people pay for their internet connection and then gorge themselves on the abundant free content that’s available online. Because there’s so much out there which costs nothing at all – from web news to streaming video to software applications – internet users tend to balk at the idea of actually having to pull out their wallets to make a purchase. It’s the internet itself that has led us down this path to a place where old monetization models simply no longer apply. What’s the Answer? The report goes on to look at the business models of all sorts of content sites in detail including online news/newspapers, video, movies, music, and online games. While the ways consumers access these different types of content may vary (RSS for reading news, streaming videos, downloading music), the findings are relatively consistent across the board. With only a few exceptions (Apple’s iTunes Store, music-based games like Guitar Hero, etc.), many of the current business models are not sustainable. So what’s the answer? There isn’t really a good one just yet. Many businesses try “freemium” models which convert power users to paying users. Other sites try sustaining themselves on online ads (which is difficult to do in a down economy). But the best ideas for new business models may very well be the ones that haven’t even been thought up yet. The only question is whether or not they’ll be discovered in time before more content-producing industries fail.Image credits – used freely thanks to the Internet and Creative Commons: downloading, flickr user Arenamontanus; I love P2P, flickr user Brocco Lee; p2p logo, flickr user jatop Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… sarah perez 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#New Media#NYT#p2p#Trends#web center_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts last_img read more

first_imgNational Conference president and MP Farooq Abdullah on Thursday described Kashmir as “a political problem” and pitched for meaningful India-Pakistan dialogue on the issue.“There should be a meaningful, result-oriented dialogue between India and Pakistan. The stakeholders in Afghanistan are nearing a solution notwithstanding the violence that the country is fraught with. Both India and Pakistan should open the channels of dialogue with the people of State living on either side of the Line of Control. It should be followed by a dialogue between India and Pakistan,” said Dr. Abdullah, while speaking on the occasion of 19th death anniversary of his mother in Srinagar. He called for an all encompassing dialogue. “It will enable both the countries reach a solution, which is acceptable to people living in the different regions of the erstwhile State. I believe we have had enough, if both India and Pakistan have to grow then it is indispensable for them to find solutions to the issues hammering their relation. Any solution, if it has to be a viable one, should offer a win-win situation for the two countries as well as the people living across the erstwhile state,” he said.On internal politics of the country, Dr. Abdullah said the country he was living in “is poles apart from what it used to be, and what it was desired to be by the founding fathers of the Constitution of India.”“Today, we have a political dispensation at the helm of affairs at the Centre that is inclined to rob the country of its secular character. The fascist and communal forces are hell bent to change the secular visage of the country. Nonetheless India belongs to all its citizens, the country belongs to all. The country men have to keep it in their mind that the idea of progress is deficient if any community feels left out. India cannot grow if the growth of its minorities is stunted,” he said. The MP from Srinagar said the catch-words of ‘Sab Ka Saath Sab Ka Vikas’ didn’t see any implementation. “We see how our people are being intimidated on the national highway. Every now and then we see the Governor administration come up with reckless diktats of all sorts. I don’t see any of the actions of the Central government reflect their sincerity for the materialisation of the slogan,” said Dr. Abdullah.last_img read more

first_imgHaving created quite a ruckus by deciding to leave the Indian football squad just days before the team departs for the 2011 Asian Cup in Doha, manager Pradeep Chowdhury tried to clear the air on Saturday.Chowdhury called a team meeting and said that although he had issues with national coach Bob Houghton, that wasn’t the sole reason behind his decision to return to India.Speaking to MAIL TODAY, a team official said that the players were quite surprised when Chowdhury, who has otherwise remained aloof since joining the players a week ago, called them just minutes before the team left for their morning training session.”Chowdhury called the players for a meeting and although they were taken aback initially as they were busy getting on to the team bus, they all decided to go ahead and give him a sound hearing.”In the meeting, he said that although he had issues with Houghton, that wasn’t the reason behind his decision to return home.”Having joined the team a week back, he said that he had some pending work and also some health issues which forced him to take the call.” However, the official said that Chowdhury had initially decided to leave without informing any of the players or the team management.”It was Bhaichung Bhutia who confronted Chowdhury on Friday after dinner and that is when he came clean and said that he couldn’t take it anymore and was heading home,” he said.”He has been with team for more than four years now and every player is disappointed that he couldn’t look at the wider picture and stay with the team at a time when India’s first match in the Asian Cup against Australia on January 10 is about two weeks away.” Defender Gouramangi Singh feels that at a time when the players were regaining confidence after the drubbing in the recent friendlies, such an incident could have easily been avoided.advertisement”Pradip da has been an inspiration for us and till now he has always maintained that Houghton was the best thing to happen to Indian football. Now that he has issues, he suddenly decides to abandon the team. This isn’t something we expected from him.”The team’s morale was anyway down after the recent defeats and just when we were looking to bounce back, this incident once again hit us. But we won’t let this incident affect our preparations and we will ensure that when we reach Doha, we are fully prepared,” Gouramangi told M AIL T ODAY from Dubai.”When so many people – 30 players and quite a few officials – stay together as a family, issues are bound to take place. But do we abandon our family mid- way if we have problems with them? It is sad that he didn’t feel the need to stay with the team when we need senior figures like him with us.” Syed Rahim Nabi echoed Gouramangi’s sentiments saying that if Chowdhury had issues with Houghton, he should have left earlier rather than waiting for so long.”I can understand that he had issues with Houghton. But why did he wait so long before making his displeasure public? He should have left right at the start rather than waiting for so long. This won’t augur well for the morale of the team,” he said.Meanwhile, a senior member in the team said that although Houghton would name the 23- member squad for the Asian Cup on Monday, the seven players omitted were free to stay with the team.”Houghton has said that while he will be picking the 23- member squad on Monday, the rest of the 30- member squad could stay back before we leave for Doha on January 6,” he said.Commenting on the fitness of key players, the player said: ” Bhutia looks in doubt for the showpiece event although he will surely travel to Doha. As for Sunil Chhetri, he has started training with us after an injury to his big toe on his left foot.”Even Samir Naik, who has been perennially injured since the Nehru Cup, has started training although he is yet to join the rest of the players.”last_img read more

The Food Storage and Prevention of Infestation Division (FSPID), in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICAF) has confiscated 70 metric tonnes (1575 bags) of White Cinderella rice, valued at approximately $4.6 million, which was imported from Guyana by a local distributor.Upon inspection the rice had signs of mould growth, clumping, discolouration and wetting. As a result, the rice was detained by a Food Storage Inspector.Subsequently, a statutory detention notice was placed on the rice and samples collected were submitted to the FSPID’s Microbiology Laboratory for testing. The results revealed that the rice had microbial levels above the accepted limits. Therefore, the rice was deemed not suitable for human consumptions and was condemned. This seizure is the first for the year. The rice was imported by a large chain distributor in Jamaica with whom the matter was discussed extensively, and in keeping with the Food Storage and Prevention of Infestation (FSPI) Act (1958) and Regulations (1973), the rice were detained while arrangements made for disposal. The FSPID is a regulatory department with responsibility for ensuring the safety and wholesomeness of food entering commerce.
