Happy feat for skater Davis

first_imgDavis holds the world records in the 1,000 and 1,500, but finished a disappointing sixth last month in the overall standings at the Allround World Championships. He said the season wasn’t much different from a year ago, when his spat with American teammate Chad Hedrick overshadowed the five medals – including one gold for each – they combined to win at the Turin Games. “Olympic year, non-Olympic year,” Davis said, “it’s always a challenge.” South Koreans won all six events on the final day of the short track speedskating world championships in Milan, Italy. Five-time Olympic medalist Apolo Anton Ohno finished third in both the 1,000 and 3,000 and started off the United States’ bronze-medal performance in the 5,000-meter relay. Davis, who won gold and silver last year in the Olympics, closed 2007 by winning three of his last four races. He also won the 1,000 meters Saturday, six days after he broke his world record in the 1,500. “I was able to finish the year strong and hopefully I can carry the momentum from this year into next year,” he said. Shani Davis is heading toward summer with a winning streak and much less turmoil. The American closed the season by winning the men’s 1,500 meters Sunday at the World Single Distances Speedskating Championships in Kearns, Utah, barely missing his world record while claiming a second title in two days. center_img Hans Grugger led a 1-2 Austrian finish in a World Cup super-G race in Kvitfjell, Norway, and American Bode Miller finished seventh but increased his lead in the discipline standings. Marlies Schild of Austria won a World Cup slalom for the seventh time this season to claim first place in the overall standings. Julia Mancuso of the United States, second overall entering the race, finished 24th in Zwiesel, Germany. Lindsey Jacobellis added the World Cup snowboardcross title to her 2007 world championships gold in the discipline, leading every heat in the final, winning for the second time in four days in Wilmington, N.Y. SOCCER: Chelsea scored twice in the last 19 minutes to tie Tottenham 3-3 in the FA Cup quarterfinals and force a replay. Blackburn, with former U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel in net, reached the semifinals by beating Manchester City 2-0. Watford also made it to the semis, beating Plymouth Argyle 1-0. AC Milan lost for the first time in 16 games, beaten 2-1 by Inter Milan in the Italian league on two goals in the second half. Sevilla missed a chance to take over first place in the Spanish league, losing 1-0 to Gimnastic Tarragona on Javier Portillo’s 76th-minute goal. Werder Bremen held Bayern Munich to a 1-1 tie, cutting Schalke’s lead in the Bundesliga to three points. CYCLING: David Millar won a prologue to take the lead at the Paris-Nice race, which began despite threats of a boycott. The Scottish rider finished in 6 minutes, 1 second in a 2.9-mile dash Issy-Les-Moulineaux, France. The race started after arguments between organizers of the sport’s three main races and cycling’s governing body, which threatened to disrupt the season. Nine hours of haggling averted a boycott and staved off a possible split in the sport. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
