In this year’s report, San Diego County received an F grade for ozone and C grade for particle pollution. The news release is below. All emergency and casualty services will continue to function,” said the statement issued by IMA. However, the government hospitals in the state will continue its services and will function without any halt.Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has also requested the doctors to ensure a peaceful strike. “Assault on anyone is unacceptable. I condemn the attack on the doctors and request the doctors on strike today to ensure that their protest is peaceful and does not cause any problems to the patients,” read his tweet. These students have bagged more than 80 percent or even 90 percent marks in History in the Board examinations. Even Granthan Sengupta, who came first in Higher Secondary examination, is among the students who have secured poor marks in JU’s History entrance test. Have the answer scripts been examined properly,” the minister questioned.He, who has always claimed that admission should be strictly on the basis of merit, was critical against a section of students who had agitated in the varsity demanding admission test for a number of days last month. “Now, I will ask those students who had agitated whether there has been transparency in the evaluation of the answer scripts in the entrance examination,” Chatterjee said.JU decided on Thursday that Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das will be acting as the Chairman of the admission committee of Jadavpur University and a fresh review of the History answer scripts will be conducted. Registrar Chiranjib Bhattacharjee will assist the V-C. The decision was taken after Dean of Arts Subhasish Biswas wrote to Vice-Chancellor Das praying resignation.”I strongly declare that the entire crisis which has taken place in the admission procedure of BA admission test in History of JU is due to my negligence of work and I am solely responsible for that… In the case of admission test in History, I detected an uneven marking after receiving many complaints,” Biswas’ self-declaration stated.A senior JU administrative official said Biswas’ resignation from the post of Dean of Arts has been accepted and he will no longer be involved in the admission process. “He is also the head of the History department. His resignation from this post is still under consideration,” the official added.A section of students had been demanding the resignation of Biswas in the wake of this crisis and had gheraoed Das and some other senior administrative officials on Wednesday. Cars are no longer merely steel on wheels. They’re mobile computers that can respond to voice commands, serve as a hub for digital entertainment and drive themselves.Fortune spoke with Fields recently at Ford’s Silicon Valley lab, an office that opened earlier this year as a beachhead for innovation. He’s hoping that having workers on the ground in the heart of the tech industry’s capital will help the company identify and adopt new technology more quickly. Ford is facing a stiff challenge to keep up from the usual auto making suspects plus newcomers like Google and Tesla. Even Uber, the ride hailing app, is a threat if people stop buying cars and use its service instead to be driven where they need to go.The following is a Q&A with Fields that has been edited for length and clarity:Q: How important are self-driving cars to Ford?They’re important. But it’s more important to think about self-driving cars more holistically. We call this Ford Smart Mobility. It’s not only about autonomous vehicles, it’s about the connected car, it’s about mobility and ride sharing. It’s around the enabling technologies for the retail experience. All these things are connected. You can’t have an autonomous vehicle unless you have a connected car, and visa versa. You can’t have ride sharing without having the connection. They’re all intertwined.Q: Is it important to be first? Ford isn’t really seen as being in the lead on self-driving cars.It’s not the No. 1 thing that drives us. I think the No. 1 thing that drives us, and it gets back to our DNA as a company going back to our founder, Henry Ford, is around innovating to make things accessible to everyone — not just the rich. Even now, semi-autonomous features are the building blocks for full autonomy. When you look the breadth of semi-autonomous features that we have in our vehicles, we’re in a leading position there. With everything from our Fiesta all the way up to our Lincolns — customers can get a lot of these features. So as we go forward, we’re going to make sure that we continue to build on that legacy and push ourselves to make sure it’s accessible and affordable – not necessarily being the first.Q: Are you considering partnering with Google, which is only a few miles from here, or other companies on self-driving cars?When you think about some of these enabling technologies, we have to ask ourselves some very important questions like what do we want to develop as our own core competency? Who do we want to partner with? We’ve done that throughout our history as a company. Where it makes sense, we’ll work with others.Q: You talk about selling autonomous vehicles to the masses, but the components cost thousands of dollars extra. How do you get to the price where the average person can buy a self-driving car?You innovate. In Silicon Valley, there’s Moore’s Law (the axiom that microchips will get more powerful and less expensive). I don’t know what the law is for the automotive industry. We’re always looking for ways to increase performance and capabilities and decrease cost. There are cameras, radars, and 3-D mapping. When you look at the cost of cameras, it’s coming down significantly. When you get to autonomous vehicles, you’ll need much more computer processing capability in the vehicle. The cost of microprocessors is continuing to go down. Also, scale is important, and as a company, I think we have pretty good scale.Q: How much of a challenge is Uber under the theory that fewer people will need to buy cars in the future?We’re looking at some of these societal trends around mega cities with more than 10 million or more vehicles – the congestion, the air quality implications, and the growth of the middle class around the globe. Of course, the first thing they want to do is buy a car, which increases the congestion even more. We’re looking at that as an opportunity in two ways: One is to sell cars to people who want to own them. Two is to provide mobility experiences to people who otherwise we are not serving today. We’re doing these 25 experiments around the world right now – we’re about halfway through them – to understand what are some of the mobility issues [Editor’s note: the experiments include a car sharing service, a commuter shuttle service, and technology that spots open parking spaces]. Then we’re asking ourselves: How do we help solve some of these societal issues?Q: How are those experiments going? And are you really interested in getting into those businesses?It may seem far-fetched from a traditional automaker. But we’re asking our people to challenge and question tradition. That’s extremely empowering to the organization. This is a culture of innovation. We as a senior team need to allow it. Not all of these experiments will succeed. But that’s okay, because we are looking to learn from them. Some may go on to the next step and ultimately become some kind of service or product.Q: How much do the high valuations of tech companies dissuade you from making tech acquisitions?Any company needs to be always on the lookout for technology that makes sense. It gets back to what I mentioned earlier: Making decisions about what’s core for us versus who do we want to go out and partner with. In some cases, we have made acquisitions. We bought a company called Livio about two years ago (a developer of in-car connectivity software), because we thought that was core for us. But I think also you have to be wary of it. Because what can look like a really cool technology this month, may look like something else in six months.Q: How much to you pay attention to the really far-out tech beyond self-driving cars?In our business, you have one foot in today – making sure you’re running your business, meeting your sales forecasts, meeting your quarterly earnings – and also one foot into tomorrow: 10, 15 years down the road. We have a very disciplined process. That’s one of the reasons we’re here and growing. Some of these unique technologies are being born here today as we speak and will be born six months from now. That’s why it’s important for us to be part of this community.Q: Ford’s is facing a tough challenge in China. General Motors and Volkswagen sell a lot of cars there. How is Ford going to do better?We’re doing very well now in China. We’ve had record market share. In the first quarter this year, our share was 4.5%. Clearly that’s not as large as some of our main competitors who are in the 10% or 11% range. But that’s up from almost 2% a couple of years ago. In the first quarter, we went from No. 8 in the passenger vehicle segment to No. 5. We were in Shanghai last week introducing our Taurus. We were not in the full-size segment – that’s a big segment in China. Now we’re going to be there. We now have a full lineup of SUVs. We’re expanding our manufacturing capability. We’re expanding our dealer network, particularly in the Tier 3 through 6 cities, where a lot of the growth is coming from.Q: Ford is pushing to make Lincoln a global luxury brand. It’s not the first time. Similar efforts have ebbed and flowed over the years.It’s flowing now.Q: Why is this time different?The reason it’s different this time is that we understand the strategic importance of the luxury market. The luxury market is maybe 9.5% or 10% of the global industry. When you look at the profitability, it’s about one-third. So it’s very compelling. There are a lot of good competitors in the luxury segment. We thought long and hard about how do we differentiate Lincoln in a relevant way. At the same time, we have to understand that we are one of the smallest luxury players. So how do we turn that to our advantage and give that customer personal service? When you look at our dealerships in China, which we get to start from a clean sheet, it’s like walking into a high-end boutique. It’s not one of these large factory-type things like a bakery where you take a number. first_img Friday, December 16, 2016 TORONTO — In the 45 days prior to booking a trip, Canadians make 161 visits to travel sites, according to the 2016 Traveler’s Path to Purchase study by comScore.What’s more, Canadian consumers collectively spend 148 billion minutes per month interacting with digital content, and 70% of those people are consuming digital travel content.As shockingly high as those numbers are, Canada actually lags behind the UK and the U.S. for just about everything related to travel and technology. The growth rate for Canadian consumption of digital travel content is only 18%, compared to 44% in the UK and 41% in the U.S.And while Canadian travellers “are slowly shifting away from desktop-only usage at 36% in 2016 compared to 46% in 2015”, by and large Canadians spend many more minutes on their desktop computers and laptops than their smartphones and tablets.Simply put, when it comes to checking out travel sites online – whether it’s a travel review site, hotel and airline sites, an OTA or, ideally, the booking-friendly website of a traditional bricks-and-mortar travel agency – Canadian consumers still prefer using their desktop computers and laptops over iPhones or iPads. Going on the Internet and consuming online travel content via mobile devices – whether it’s on a smartphone or tablet – hasn’t caught on here quite as quickly as in the UK and the U.S. Growth is slow but steady.Which begs the question: do travel agencies here need to invest thousands of dollars in a mobile-friendly app that will enable clients to book with their bricks-and-mortar travel agency with a touch of their finger on their smartphones and tablets?Frederic de Pardieu doesn’t think travel agencies need a mobile app for bookings. And he’s in the travel app business. De Pardieu, CEO of Montreal-based mtrip (mtrip.com), says the best strategy for travel agencies is two-fold.For bookings, an agency should have a “responsive” website, that is, a website where the design works well with various screen sizes and can be adapted for mobile.The best time for an app, says de Pardieu, is in the post-booking stage.“Providing a native mobile app after the booking is the best way for agents to increase loyalty and generate revenue by engaging with the clients during the whole trip,” says de Pardieu.A native app is what most of us think of when it comes to apps. At Apple’s App Store, there’s an estimated two million apps available for download. Just about everything we do with our phones and tablets these days is via those colourful little app icons on our screens.Having a native mobile app for iOS and Android for the booking stage does not make sense, says de Pardieu. “Some have invested in a native app and the ROI is very weak.”More news:  Sunwing ready to launch Mazatlán-Quebec City direct this winterNot only that, but the cost of a native app built from scratch can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000. A customizable white-label app customizable costs around $10,000 “however some small agencies share the same app for a very low starter cost”, says de Pardieu.At the post-booking stage, on the other hand, a mobile app makes sense, says de Pardieu. “On the post-booking stage, you continue engaging with the client by providing a mobile app which will be downloaded if you offer an added-value product (not only a list of bookings but helpful features like real-time flight alerts, flight check-in, offline maps and directions, offline travel guides). The agency will continue to own their client and increase loyalty.” A mobile website doesn’t fit the purpose on the post-booking side as it doesn’t work offline – it can’t be used abroad as nobody wants to pay roaming charges – plus features are limited and there’s not the same agency-client connection, he said.While the retail travel industry, like just about every other industry, is overwhelmed with the ‘Go Mobile or Die’ message and can be forgiven for throwing up its hands in overwhelmed exasperation at all the tech trends hitting the travel domain, competitors with very deep pockets are making strides.“Large travel brands are now focusing on a holistic approach of their mobile offering, which means engaging with their clients after the booking and during the whole trip,” says de Pardieu.Google launched Google Trips, he adds, a travel assistant which includes bookings, travel guides, maps “and they will soon let users book flights and accommodation”. Airbnb just launched its new app. “They want to become an OTA,” says de Pardieu.“This is a real threat for bricks-and-mortar travel agents as these players will draw more traffic from them. Travel agencies should definitively engage with their clients during the whole trip by providing a mobile travel assistant.”Jean Collette with Club Voyages Dumoulin, has a white-label version of mtrip’s post-booking app. “My mobile product is an app you find in Google Play and Apple’s App store,” says Collette. “It is free but in order to get the access codes you need to purchase a travel product or service from my agency. The app download mechanic works with my back office system. The minute an invoice is created the important information is transferred directly from my back office program to my app program, for example, name of client, email, dates, destination, itinerary, product or service description, etc.”Collette introduced his agency app this past summer and says he’s waiting for the winter travel season to see just how valuable the app is for his business. “[In terms of] ROI, it is too early; most of our clients will use the app over the winter. The strategy with the app is more for client retention than client acquisition.”More news:  War of words between Transat, Group Mach ramps upHis investment started with a set-up fee of $15,000 and a monthly fee of $1,500 based on 5,000 clients per year.Collette says his clients can do many things with the app “and the best things is the app works offline at destination. Clients can pre-register their flights, they get a complete travel guide of their destination, they get all the information on the shopping, dining, nightlife, tours and excursions, monetary device converter, the weather, it has a geo-localization navigator, AR (augmented reality) features, they can book, flight, cars, hotels, trips and excursions and city tours.”He adds “we have a website but we were not present in smartphones. Now we are and I believe it is a strong way to stay connected with our clients.”One popular post-booking app, from Umapped, was picked up by TPI. This fall TPI announced it had joined forces with the Canadian travel tech start-up to provide TPI clients with an interactive mobile itinerary with real-time messaging and content that extends to the client’s personal and social networks.Meanwhile TPI’s Internet booking search engine is mobile-friendly and both TPI advisors and clients have access to this tool and can book travel through this tool via their desktop PC or mobile device. TPI plans to add a cruise booking engine to this tool in the near future. “Our goal at TPI is to provide our advisors with the tools they need to focus on the customer,” said TPI VP, Tim Morgan.Softvoyage’s VP Sales & Marketing, Dan Langevin, says Softvoyage is seeing a huge uptake on its various platforms being accessed via mobile technology.
