first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Over the weekend we got two inches spread out over three days with no flooding and no ponding. It was an awesome rain. I think it will almost complete the corn and I think the beans are really soaking it up. We were really dry with all of the 90-degree heat. That rain was really a blessing. That is a money rain. It has been a good year with good timely rains.I hope the heat didn’t hurt us too much. I have some concerns with pollination. The corn looks tremendous, but did those 90-degree temperatures shave off of the top end yield? I think it might have but I think this will still be a really good corn crop. We’ve got gray leaf spot in the corn in some hybrids. I chose not to spray the corn for two reasons. One, I am hoping that corn is far enough along that it won’t be too yield damaging. Then I kind of thought that we missed the optimum date to spray the corn.In soybeans we have quite a bit of frogeye leaf spot. We sprayed over half of our soybean acres with fungicides. This is the first time I have sprayed for frogeye. The double-crops look as good as I’ve ever had. They came up and they had good heat and moisture and, with another two inches of rain on them, they look awesome. We’ve sprayed all of our beans with the herbicide and the only thing left we have to spray is the double-crop beans. We put a lot of compost down and we deep-tilled our wheat ground because we’d had some flooding on it. We worked that up, got the rain on it and I’m picking the cover crop up today to plant as soon as it is dried down and ready to go.We plant early soybean varieties to get the wheat planted as soon as possible. If you get your wheat in on time around the first of October it corresponds to good wheat yields. And we have gone with early- to mid-season wheat to get the wheat crop off, get the double-crops in and some of the early cover crops planted. We tend to lean toward early- to mid- wheat varieties.I hope everyone got a good bit of early contracting done. I don’t see much changing in the markets now before harvest. Hopefully we can harvest a good crop, store it and see what happens next year.last_img read more

In face, e-book sales have more than doubled since the same time last year. According to the AAP, e-book sales are up 115.8%, from $32.4 million to $69.9 million year-over-year.But how does that impact the rest of the publishing industry? Do more e-book sales mean more books are being sold? Are e-readers and iPads engaging a new audience of readers (or at least book buyers)? Or are consumers simply making the switch from print to digital?According to the AAP figures, the growth in e-book sales didn’t save the industry from declining sales. But the drop in sales overall was small – just 1.9% – as total book sales across all platforms and across all categories fell from $821.5 million in January 2010 to $805.7 million in January of this year.More interesting, however, the breakdown in those sales: the adult mass market paperback section fell the most, declining over 30%. Adult paperbacks dropped almost 20%. Adult hardcover sales fell 11%. Children’s hardcover and paperback sales fell, too – 2% and 17.7% respectively. Altogether, the drop in sales of these two key elements of the publishing industry amounted to a $50 million decline. It may be that our book consumption habits – both buying and reading – are changing. In addition to the explosion in e-book sales was a growth in downloadable audio book sales. That category rose by 8.8%, although it’s still a very small cut of the overall industry and that increase meant just a half million dollar boost. The publishing industry is clearly still reeling from the rapid adoption of e-books by consumers, and it is trying to work out new pricing and licensing models. Of course the implications here aren’t just for the book industry, but for authors, readers, libraries and bookstores alike, as our book buying and reading habits change. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts last_img read more

first_imgIT + Project Management: A Love Affair brian proffitt Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… Related Posts Even as more and more companies embace social media for internal and external communication, only a few are actively managing the risk that social media entails. These companies are strolling unprotected through a minefield that might one day destroy a cherished brand or lead angry regulators to their doorstep.According to survey results from the Altimeter Group, nearly “two-thirds of companies surveyed say that social media is a significant or critical risk to their brand reputation.” But 60% of those companies deliver social media training and expectations to their employees only once – upon their hiring – or don’t bother to train their employees about social media at all. That’s a pretty big group, especially since other reports peg the proportion of U.S. companies using some sort of social media at 80%.“Companies are often aware of the risks at some level, but instead of taking specific concrete actions, they cross their fingers and hope that they dodge the bullet,” wrote Alan Webber in the report. With so many companies using social media, and even acknowledging the risk involved with using it to communicate with customers through branding and marketing efforts, why are so many firms not being more proactive about protecting themselves?“The simple answer is that most companies are still enamored with social media and don’t want to admit that there is a risk–simply if we don’t see it, it really isn’t there,” Webber told ReadWriteWeb. “For those that acknowledge the risk, even most of them just assume that they won’t be targeted or what they already have in place if crisis comes is enough.”Assessing the Risks of Social Media It may not be enough, because the risks can be serious and varied. Brand reputation, which topped survey results for concerned risks at 66%, can massively effect a company’s credibility, as Kenneth Cole learned in February 2011 when the company tweeted “Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo – KC”Then there’s the risk of releasing confidential information. That’s what happened to Gene Morphis, the former CFO at Francesca’s Holdings (a fashion retailer and public company), who was fired in May after tweeting confidential information like “Roadshow completed. Sold $275 million of secondary shares. Earned my pay this week.” on January 27.You don’t even have to originate the poor communications to be at fault, either. In 2011, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission found Allergy  Pathway Pty Ltd. at fault for misleading comments fans on its Facebook page and Twitter made about the company’s products. Even thoughAllergy Pathway didn’t actually make the false statements, the Commission fined the company for not correcting them after the fact. The risk of hijacking is also a real problem, as Shell Oil discovered to its dismay this summer when it tried to launch the now-infamous “Let’s Go” ads, only to find social media-distributed mock ads proliferating the Internet like wildfire and a fake Shell Twitter account broadcasting mock threats to perpetrators. McDonald’s found itself in similar straits back in January when its #McDStories Twitter campaign was tweetjacked with embarrassing stories about the restaurant chain instead of the wholesome, fun stories it seemed to be seeking.Dealing with the Risks of Social MediaAltimeter’s report emphasized that all the risks must be identified before a company can properly manage them. And resource dedication must be a part of that management plan. The survey identified 43% of respondents having less than one full-time-equivalent staffer dedicated to managing social media risk. The report urges companies to start taking social media a lot more seriously, even following IBM’s example by making social media a board-level issue. A good place to start is to watch and learn from other companies’ mistakes and successes in dealing with social media crises, and learn from your own company’s past mistakes, as well. Once your social media responses are in place, test them through exercises or even full “war games” to see how the plan works.Ignoring the risks of social media is a dangerous game. The real question is when, not if, a social media storm will threaten your company.Images courtesy of Shutterstock.
