first_img At the end of the third quarter, the gap was $102 a month. The company surveyed 29 markets between the Pacific Ocean and Indianapolis, Ind. Seven markets – all in California – had rents averaging more than $1,000 a month. Rents declined from a year ago in two markets, Colorado Springs and Tucson, and remained flat in two, Denver and Oklahoma City. The least expensive market was Oklahoma City, with an average rent of $530 a month. RealFacts said that there are few signs that this trend will change, so most renters will have stable rents and supply. But renting remains less advantageous in expensive markets like those in Colorado. Lawrence Souza, chief economic consultant for the Sacramento-based California Apartment Association, said that rents are higher in the Los Angeles area because of the region’s more robust economy. The Bay Area took a big hit from the tech-bubble burst and is still struggling to create jobs. “Southern California has a more diverse economy. And I think a lot of people who were living … in Northern California migrated to Southern California because there were jobs being created,” he said. Gregory J. The Los Angeles area maintained its grip on the title of most expensive rental market in the West during the third quarter with its lead over the Bay Area continuing to grow, an industry tracker said Wednesday. But housing prices have hit such high levels that renting an apartment still looks like a bargain, said RealFacts, a Novato-based research firm that specializes in the apartment market. Average rents in the Los Angeles, Long Beach and Santa Ana area edged up by 1.9 percent during the third quarter from the prior three-month period and jumped by 6.3 percent from a year ago, the company said. At the same time, housing prices have increased by 20 percent or more from a year earlier in many communities across the state. That level represents a market in balance, said Chris Bates, the company’s investment analyst. “The renters don’t have to give their first-born, and there is enough of a demand that landlords have an opportunity to increase rents at an acceptable rate,” he said. RealFacts tracks apartment buildings of 100 units or more. The Los Angeles survey includes 1,001 buildings: 100 considered Class A – those built in the last 10 years; 280 Class B, built in the last 20 years; and the balance Class C properties, built at least 30 years ago. Los Angeles supplanted San Francisco atop the high-rent list in the first quarter of 2004, with L.A. rents averaging $11 a month more than those up north. last_img read more

first_img14 July 2011 South African hospitality group Singita Game Reserves is now firmly at the top of the industry after walking off with the honours in the 2011 US Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards readers’ survey. Singita’s safari hotels and lodges were rated against top competition from around the world. Its Grumeti Reserves, situated close to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, came in at number one on Travel + Leisure World’s list of 100 top hotels. Also, Singita’s flagship Sabi Sand, located within the greater boundaries of the world-famous Kruger National Park, was ranked at number two. Sabi Sand features Singita’s original lodges, Singita Ebony and Singita Boulders, as well as the Singita Castleton, an exclusive-use facility. As if this wasn’t enough, the Singita Kruger National Park, overlooking the N’wanetsi River in the park’s northern region, rounded off the honours for the group by taking the 39th spot on the list, and was also named the best Hotel Spa in Africa and the Middle East. The Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards are given to top hotels, destinations, airlines, cruises, outfitters and transportation companies in the world. The winners are chosen by readers in a survey where they are rated on a scale of one to five, with five being excellent. The winners of this year’s survey, the 16th edition, were announced on 7 July on US television channel NBC’s Today Show. They were due to receive their awards at a ceremony in Los Angeles on 14 July.Practising modern conservation Singita Reserves’ chief marketing officer, Lindy Rousseau, said: “Singita today manages and is responsible for 570 000 acres in Africa. We operate ten lodges in four destinations in three countries.” The group practises so-called modern conservation, said Rossouw. She described the concept as “a finely tuned relationship between wildlife, local communities and tourism”. Singita is committed to tourism that delivers a high value but leaves a low impact on the environment, meaning that habitats are sensitively managed. As a result, animal populations are thriving in Singita areas. As an example, said Roussouw, a mere eight years ago hardly an animal was seen in Grumeti, but today it boasts the most prolific game populations in East Africa. “We spend more on wildlife projects and community development than anyone else,” said Rousseau. She expressed her gratitude at the honour of being voted a world leader by some of the most discerning travellers to be found anywhere.African splendour The results of the survey attest to the splendour of Africa’s natural scenery, the attraction of its great hospitability, and the enchantment it leaves on those who have travelled and stayed there. Singita describes the impact of its destinations on guests as “nothing short of life changing”. The group’s luxury lodges can be found in South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. In South Africa, the Singita Ebony and Singita Boulders lie within the world’s best leopard viewing area, while the Singita Castleton, a private six-roomed villa, is situated close to one of the most frequented waterholes in the Kruger National Park. Guests can spot the Big Five – lion; leopard; rhino; elephant and buffalo – at these locations. In Tanzania, home of the world’s best hotel; millions of wildebeest can be seen during the migration season as the hotel is located on a prime viewing site along the animals’ annual route. In Zimbabwe, Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve is a haven for endangered species like the black rhino. The reserve has a vast collection of baobab trees and offers breathtaking views of the Malilangwe Dam. Rousseau said: “When it comes to hotels, the new world order is very different from just five years ago. Today it is about authenticity, integrity and being real. I think this is why more and more guests identify with what we are doing.” First published by MediaClubSouthAfrica.com – get free high-resolution photos and professional feature articles from Brand South Africa’s media service.last_img read more

first_imgA trade group representing manufacturers, retailers and installers of photovoltaic (PV) systems has published a short guide for homeowners who want to buy or lease a system. The Solar Energy Industries Association’s Residential Consumer Guide to Solar Power offers a summary of the three options homeowners have for getting into solar: buying a system outright, leasing a system, or signing a power purchase agreement in which they buy power produced from a system on their property at a set rate.Publication of the guide comes at a time of heady growth for residential PV in the U.S. Solar electricity still makes up a very small percentage of power consumed in the U.S., but installations are expanding rapidly. Not only are prices for solar panels continuing to fall, making an outright purchase much more attractive than in the past, but homeowners also can reap many of the benefits of solar without upfront payments by leasing a system. But rapid growth also has brought some problems. Earlier this year, a dozen members of Congress asked two federal agencies to look into complaints that consumers can be hoodwinked by deceptive sales practices. In a letter to the Federal Trade Commission, Republican House members said some solar leasing companies might be overstating savings and understating risks. In addition, other reports suggest solar leases can complicate and even kill pending real estate sales as buyers balk at existing contract terms. Know what you’re getting intoThe SEIA draws parallels between buying or lease a solar system and weighing the options for car ownership. Its pamphlet suggests that homeowners do their homework before making a decision so they know how much electricity they use, whether the roof on their house is suitable for a solar installation, and how much they can comfortably spend. It recommends that homeowners approach solar energy as they would any other major decision about home ownership: get multiple bids, research the potential installer, and study potential tax consequences and financial incentives. The pamphlet doesn’t offer much detail beyond a bare-bones explanation of how a system works, but it does include several links for additional information.“Consumer protection is an issue of highest priority and is vital to solar’s future growth across America,” SEIA President and CEO Rhone Resch said in a written statement.last_img read more

first_imgFormer Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi, an accused in a corruption case, was slapped with aDelhi High Court notice on a plea opposing his visit to London during the Olympics later this month. The court has also sought a response from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) within three days, and asked Kalmadi not to leave the country prior to July 26, his scheduled date of departure. The Public Interest Litigation filed by advocate Rahul Mehra on Wednesday sought the court’s direction to restrain Kalmadi from visiting London saying he was facing trial in a corruption case and could not be allowed to represent the country in an international event.A division bench of Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw, issuing notice to Kalmadi and IOA, which he heads, said: “Issue notice to respondents (IOA and Kalmadi)… He (Kalmadi) is not going to leave the country before his scheduled date of July 26.”The bench posted the matter for July 24 for further hearing. The court asked Kalmadi, who is also president of the Asian Athletes Association and member of the Council of International Association of Athletes Federation, not to advance his slated July 26 departure for Olympics.Mehra, objecting to the London trip of Kalmadi, said he was going to attend the games on public money and in violation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) code of ethics. He also alleged that Kalmadi was in jail for nine months in a criminal case and the IOC charter also prohibited such persons from attending any event organised by it.advertisementA special CBI court July 13 had allowed Kalmadi to visit London from July 26-Aug 13 for the London Olympics 2012.During the hearing countering the argument of Mehra, senior advocate Rajiv Nayyar appearing for Kalmadi, who is out on bail in a graft case related to 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, told the court that Kalmadi was leaving for London Olympics on his individual capacity and not in his official capacity as IOA president. On a court question to Nayyar as to in what capacity Kalmadi was going to London, he said: “He is not representing the government. He is going in his individual capacity as he is being invited there.”Mehra told the court that Kalmadi, as a president of IOA, had given two undertakings (in January and February) to remain on prolonged absent from IOA and not to interfere into its day-to-day affairs, following a letter from IOC to comply with its code of ethics, as he was facing a criminal case.last_img read more

Dhoni once again profess his love for the security forces after he was spotted with regimental dagger insignia of the Indian Para Special Forces on his wicket-keeping gloves. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to get the symbol removed from Dhoni’s gloves.Speaking to IANS, Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager, Strategic Communications, said that the BCCI has been asked to get the symbol removed from Dhoni’s gloves. “We have requested the BCCI to get it removed,” she said. The “Balidan Badge” or the Army insignia was spotted on Dhoni’s gloves as television replays showed him stumping Phehlukwayo in the 40th over of the innings bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal.Balidan is a distinct insignia of the special forces, which form part of the Parachute Regiment. It has a commando dagger pointed downwards, with upward-extending wings extending from the blade and a scroll superimposed on the blade with “Balidan” inscribed in Devanagari.
