Ladon won that round, no doubt,” Picson said, adding that he hoped AIBA’s interim president, who is a former boxer and coach, could implement changes in time to keep the sport in the Olympics.“Gafur Rakhimov seems bent on satisfying the IOC so we’ll see,” said Picson. “He seems to be exerting a lot of effort to try and straighten things out, that’s a good sign. “He’s been around boxing a long time and he understands what needs to be done. The banks announced their joint funding initiative, which will be pumped directly into the national government’s budget, on 3 May 2011.This investment comes as the new government faces the task of introducing reforms that favour a democratic dispensation. Economic reforms in Tunisia are also in the spotlight as authorities have to create massive job opportunities and improve basic services.Tunisia’s transitional government was born from a citizen’s revolution that deposed long-serving President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who gave up power in January 2011. He’d been President for 23 years. The Tunisian people’s revolution was closely followed by similar demonstrations in neighbouring Egypt and Libya, as well other Arab countries in the region. While pro-reform Egyptians managed to collapse former President Hosni Mubarak’s government, the conflict rages on in Libya between leader Muammar Gaddafi’s forces and pro-democracy fighters.Fouad Mebazza, the speaker of Tunisia’s parliament, is the country’s interim president. He’s set 24 July 2011 as the day the country will hold elections that will determine a constituent council. The national body will draft a new constitution and assume executive powers until presidential and parliamentary elections are held at a date yet to be determined.“The transitional government wants to increase equity, transparency, voice and accountability, and the World Bank can support the Tunisian people in their efforts to achieve these reforms,” World Bank President Robert Zoellick said in a statement.Cooperation between the banksAFDB’s President Donald Kaberuka met his World Bank counterpart Zoellick in Tunis, the nation’s capital, on 3 May, where the leading African funder’s temporary headquarters are located. The joint funding marks stronger cooperation between the two banks, AFDB said. “We are working very closely together to support Tunisia in this period of transition,” Kaberuka said in a statement.Zoellick added: “We are deepening ties with the African Development Bank.”Zoellick’s North Africa visitZoellick is currently on a special visit to Tunisia and neighbouring Morocco, and is expected to meet top officials of the Tunisian transitional government. He will end his visit on 6 May.The World Bank said Zoellick would also visit a rural municipality in Tunisia as well as one of the poorest areas in the country to meet farmer associations and women groups. His visit to an area that needs development is based on the identified need to empower such areas as well as cities, said the World Bank.“We are especially interested to see where we can help the most disadvantaged regions of Tunisia,” said Zoellick. “Modernisation and opportunity should not just be on offer in Tunisia’s Mediterranean cities, but also extend to the interior of the country.”Zoellick’s visit to Morocco will take him to the Deuxiemes Assises de l’Industrie, the country’s major industry conference. There he’ll take part in discussions on how economic and governance reforms contribute to development. The World Bank recognises Morocco as one of the North African countries that is succeeding in implementing important economic and governance systems.“Morocco has over the past decade pursued significant economic and governance reforms, and it is important that this momentum persists so that opportunity is provided to its disadvantaged and vulnerable citizens,” said Zoellick in his statement.last_img read more

first_imgEric Eldon at InsideFacebook reports that the social network has begun experimenting with a new option for users to report the senders of friend requests as someone they don’t actually know. The prompt appears after you click to ignore a friend request.Actually knowing a person isn’t a requirement to be their friend on Facebook (unlike LinkedIn, for example), so this is an odd choice of words, but presumably the vast majority of the site’s users do only want to be friends with people they’ve met. Facebook has strict limits on the number of messages and friend requests a person can send, but apparently that hasn’t worked well enough. Tags:#social networks#web marshall kirkpatrick Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Related Posts Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Two years ago MySpace added a requirement that any friend requests sent had to be verified as human using a CAPTCHA. That cut spam friend requests on MySpace down dramatically. There is no such requirement on Facebook.Dealing with information overload and spam are key steps in creating and maintaining a user experience that keeps people coming back to non-essential websites like social networks – as opposed to email, which you’ll keep using anyway because you have to.According to Eldon, Facebook hasn’t determined yet what it will do with these reports when filed. We regularly hear about people claiming abuse by the Facebook anti-spam team but every time we call Facebook about one of those complaints, the company’s response seems quite reasonable. People do a lot of obnoxious things on Facebook. I don’t know any of those people, though, and plan on clicking a button that says so when the opportunity arises.last_img read more

first_imgaudrey watters A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#E-Books#news#NYT#web The Association of American Publishers (AAP) released its figures from January 2011 book sales, and the news echoes what we’ve come to expect: more readers are turning to e-books, and they’re doing so in droves. In face, e-book sales have more than doubled since the same time last year. According to the AAP, e-book sales are up 115.8%, from $32.4 million to $69.9 million year-over-year.But how does that impact the rest of the publishing industry? Do more e-book sales mean more books are being sold? Are e-readers and iPads engaging a new audience of readers (or at least book buyers)? Or are consumers simply making the switch from print to digital?According to the AAP figures, the growth in e-book sales didn’t save the industry from declining sales. But the drop in sales overall was small – just 1.9% – as total book sales across all platforms and across all categories fell from $821.5 million in January 2010 to $805.7 million in January of this year.More interesting, however, the breakdown in those sales: the adult mass market paperback section fell the most, declining over 30%. Adult paperbacks dropped almost 20%. Adult hardcover sales fell 11%. Children’s hardcover and paperback sales fell, too – 2% and 17.7% respectively. Altogether, the drop in sales of these two key elements of the publishing industry amounted to a $50 million decline. It may be that our book consumption habits – both buying and reading – are changing. In addition to the explosion in e-book sales was a growth in downloadable audio book sales. That category rose by 8.8%, although it’s still a very small cut of the overall industry and that increase meant just a half million dollar boost. The publishing industry is clearly still reeling from the rapid adoption of e-books by consumers, and it is trying to work out new pricing and licensing models. Of course the implications here aren’t just for the book industry, but for authors, readers, libraries and bookstores alike, as our book buying and reading habits change. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts last_img read more

A CAG official said: “We are still in the drafting stage, as we are corroborating the collected data with the agencies involved with the CWG, including the Union sports ministry and the Delhi government.”The CAG will not question the OC directly, but through the concerned ministries – sports, urban development, finance and the Delhi government. The source said: “Many who attended the OC-led Beijing trip, which included over 160 people, had virtually no role to play in the Games.””The major worry for the OC would be to clarify the suspicion over the ‘restrictive’ bidding process done for the overlays contract,” a senior OC official said. It is alleged the Rs 800 crore overlays contract was drafted to deliberately keep many competitors outside the bidding process. first_imgThe doping scandal has taken a dangerous turn. A former SAI doctor, who exposed how doping was rampant at National Institute of Sports, has been beaten up at Patiala. Dr Sajib Nandi had recently revealed to Headlines Today how the authorities at NIS Patiala were hand in glove in the doping scandal. Nandi was beaten up at the entrance of NIS Patiala and dragged out of the campus by the security guards as he was set to meet Justice Mudgal, who is probing the doping scam. Nandi told Headlines Today, “I’m filing report with the police shortly. The NIS director is a corrupt person.” Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Nandi has been attacked in his attempt to cleanse the system. Back in 2002 too, he was beaten up as he tried to expose the authorities’ role and involvement in doping at Patiala. Recently, Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir singh Badal has taken action on the chemist shops in Patiala selling banned drugs. While raids were conducted on the shops, the state government was getting ready to cancel licences of all those found guilty of selling banned drugs. On July 5, Headlines Today had exposed how performance enhancing drugs were openly sold over the counter at chemist shops around NIS in Patiala. The expose had come amid the dope stink involving eight athletes, including golden girl Ashwini Akkunji. Headlines Today special investigation team went shopping and found no checks in place here to control the sale of banned drugs. NIS Patiala has a tarnished history dating back to 2001, when syringes and steroid strips were found in its hostels. An inquiry was ordered into the functioning of NIS by the Sports Authority of India in 2003.  Though no action has yet been taken, the report is believed to contain proof of sustained irregularities in anti-doping procedures and a nexus between NIS authorities, federation coaches and SAI officers.advertisementlast_img read more
