Murray’s late equaliser delays Waterhouse fate

first_imgAnother nail was just seconds away to being driven in Waterhouse’s Red Stripe Premier League coffin when substitute Rodave Murray, showing great predatory skills, buried an opportunity to draw his team level and possibly delay their inevitable relegation. Murray’s 90th-minute strike was his first in the country’s top-flight football, and it came in only his second game, following a strike by Kenroy Howell in the 23rd, as he gave his team hopes of pulling off a rare victory. Two second-half goals from substitute Chevonne Marsh in the 57th and Dawyne Smith in the 87th set up Cavalier perfectly for the win, until Murray’s late intervention. For Murray, the occasion was bittersweet. “This is my first goal, but it is my second match in the Premier League. My first match was against UWI FC. I am feeling great, but at the same time, I am feeling disappointed. The coach said to us that the aim is to get three points, but we should not leave pointless, and we left with a point, so that is good,” the 18-year-old Dinthill daCosta Cup star said. He added: “I am disappointed because we came out here today looking a victory, and we did not get it.” Though their chances of survival are being written off with each passing match, Murray is still hopeful. KEEP ON FIGHTING “There is still time and opportunity for us, we just have to keep fighting and working hard, and the rest of the competition will tell,” said the youngster, who scored 27 goals for Dinthill last season. Besides trying to help his team survive the drop, Murray, who hails from Orange Field in Linstead, St Catherine, wants to retain his place in the country’s Under-20 squad and earn himself a professional contract. “My dream is to take it to the pro level, so I am just working hard towards that, and good performances in this league will help. “I have been invited to Jamaica’s Under-20 squad, and my aim is to join the team, work hard, and ensure that we qualify for the World Cup,” the youngster explained. At 18, Murray still has another year of eligibility at the schoolboy level, but he could pass on it if the opportunity presents itself. “I have another year at the schoolboy level, but I am not sure if I will return as yet. If I get a professional contract, I will take it. I have had offers from Europe; that is where my agent is based, so we will continue to look until something suitable comes,” Murray said. Murray added that he came close to joining Montego Bay United in the January transfer window. “I was supposed to be with Montego Bay United, but it just wasn’t working out. They wanted me to go to Cornwall College and play for Montego Bay United, but I did not want to leave Dinthill as yet, and Montego Bay is so far away from home,” he said.last_img read more

first_imgEric Eldon at InsideFacebook reports that the social network has begun experimenting with a new option for users to report the senders of friend requests as someone they don’t actually know. The prompt appears after you click to ignore a friend request.Actually knowing a person isn’t a requirement to be their friend on Facebook (unlike LinkedIn, for example), so this is an odd choice of words, but presumably the vast majority of the site’s users do only want to be friends with people they’ve met. Facebook has strict limits on the number of messages and friend requests a person can send, but apparently that hasn’t worked well enough. Tags:#social networks#web marshall kirkpatrick Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Related Posts Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Two years ago MySpace added a requirement that any friend requests sent had to be verified as human using a CAPTCHA. That cut spam friend requests on MySpace down dramatically. There is no such requirement on Facebook.Dealing with information overload and spam are key steps in creating and maintaining a user experience that keeps people coming back to non-essential websites like social networks – as opposed to email, which you’ll keep using anyway because you have to.According to Eldon, Facebook hasn’t determined yet what it will do with these reports when filed. We regularly hear about people claiming abuse by the Facebook anti-spam team but every time we call Facebook about one of those complaints, the company’s response seems quite reasonable. People do a lot of obnoxious things on Facebook. I don’t know any of those people, though, and plan on clicking a button that says so when the opportunity arises.last_img read more

first_imgThe Assam government has sent a proposal to the Centre for fast-tracking the establishment of 10 detention centres across the State to house people who would be excluded from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC).The Supreme Court-monitored register, being updated on the basis of its 1951 avatar, has to be published by July 31.Officials said each of the 10 new centres would accommodate an estimated 3,000 people. This implies the government has plans for at least 60,000 people among a few lakh expected to be excluded from the NRC. NRC exclusionAbout 40.07 lakh people out of 3.29 crore applicants had been excluded from the draft NRC published on July 30, 2018. Another 1.02 lakh people were removed from the draft list of citizens on June 26.The excluded have been given an opportunity to file claims for reinclusion in the NRC. “We have sent the proposal for 10 new centres in various places for NRC-excluded people,” Kumar Sanjay Krishna, Assam’s Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political) told The Hindu on Wednesday. As per the blueprint, a detention centre each would be established in Barpeta, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, and Sonitpur districts.Mr. Krishna also said a full-fledged detention centre was being readied in Goalpara district for declared foreigners presently lodged across six central jails in the State. The Supreme Court had ordered the State government not to club declared foreigners with criminals in jails. The Assam government had three years ago allotted 20 bighas of land for this detention centre in the Dakurbhita area of Goalpara district. Constructed by the Assam Police Housing Corporation Ltd. at a cost of ₹37 crore, the centre is expected to be inaugurated in October.Envisaging law and order issues after July 31, the deadline given by the Supreme Court to publish the final NRC, the State Home Department has organised a series of meetings from July 12-23 across six divisions of Assam.Heads of administration, police and intelligence agencies of the districts under each division have been asked to attend the meetings to be held in Tezpur, Nagaon, Jorhat, Silchar, Bongaigaon, and Guwahati. The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP) has suggested that the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Election Commission of India should adopt a mechanism to solve the issue of ‘D’, or doubtful voters for a free and fair NRC in Assam.“We met Prateek Hajela, the State Coordinator for NRC on Tuesday,” said Nanda Kirati Dewan, the BGP’s National Secretary. “He made it clear that NRC cannot reconsider the cases of people marked D-voter even if he or she has sufficient linkage documents and the legacy person [one whose lineage is claimed] or other family members are not D-voters,” Mr. Dewan added. “Data suggest that most cases of exclusion are either of D-voter, cases pending at a Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT), declared foreigner or instances of mismatch in legacy data. But there are many marked D-voters without any case referred to the Assam Police’s border wing or any FT. The Centre should come up with a mechanism to screen such cases and issue a D-Voter Clearance Certificate to the person concerned for ending unnecessary harassment,” Mr. Dewan suggested.last_img read more

first_imgThe doping scandal has taken a dangerous turn. A former SAI doctor, who exposed how doping was rampant at National Institute of Sports, has been beaten up at Patiala. Dr Sajib Nandi had recently revealed to Headlines Today how the authorities at NIS Patiala were hand in glove in the doping scandal. Nandi was beaten up at the entrance of NIS Patiala and dragged out of the campus by the security guards as he was set to meet Justice Mudgal, who is probing the doping scam. Nandi told Headlines Today, “I’m filing report with the police shortly. The NIS director is a corrupt person.” Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Nandi has been attacked in his attempt to cleanse the system. Back in 2002 too, he was beaten up as he tried to expose the authorities’ role and involvement in doping at Patiala. Recently, Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir singh Badal has taken action on the chemist shops in Patiala selling banned drugs. While raids were conducted on the shops, the state government was getting ready to cancel licences of all those found guilty of selling banned drugs. On July 5, Headlines Today had exposed how performance enhancing drugs were openly sold over the counter at chemist shops around NIS in Patiala. The expose had come amid the dope stink involving eight athletes, including golden girl Ashwini Akkunji. Headlines Today special investigation team went shopping and found no checks in place here to control the sale of banned drugs. NIS Patiala has a tarnished history dating back to 2001, when syringes and steroid strips were found in its hostels. An inquiry was ordered into the functioning of NIS by the Sports Authority of India in 2003.  Though no action has yet been taken, the report is believed to contain proof of sustained irregularities in anti-doping procedures and a nexus between NIS authorities, federation coaches and SAI officers.advertisementlast_img read more

first_imgCOPENHAGEN – A ferry with around 300 people on board was stranded in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday after the ship’s engine failed, the Danish operator said. No injuries were reported and an evacuation wasn’t immediately necessary. The breakdown aboard the Regina Seaways produced smoke, which triggered the ship’s fire extinguishing system in the engine room, Copenhagen-based DFDS Seaways said. The vessel was in international waters off Kaliningrad, Russia’s Baltic Sea exclave between Poland and Lithuania.“We are talking about a malfunction in the engine room that caused a lot of smoke,” DFDS spokesman Gert Jakobsen told The Associated Press. “Right now we are inspecting the engine room to find out whether the ship can sail on its own or needs to be tugged.”He said passengers had assembled at muster stations in preparation for a possible evacuation, but the “situation is under control.”The ferry, which also had cars and trucks on board, was travelling from Kiel, Germany to Klaipeda, Lithuania’s port city north of Kaliningrad. The crossing, one of DFDS’ many in the Baltic Sea region, normally takes about 20 hours.“On these kinds of crossings we have people from Germany, the Baltic countries and Russia. We cannot say now who was onboard,” Jakobsen said. The ship is about 85 kilometres (50 miles) from Klaipeda, said Vaidas Klumbys, another DFDS spokesman. He said that on Tuesday afternoon “we received the information from the ship that it was undergoing vibrations and smoke rising from the engines.”Russian state news agency Tass quoted Andrei Permyakov, head of the sea rescue co-ordinationcentre in Kaliningrad, as saying that rescuers from Lithuania, Russia and Poland responded.Lithuania’s navy said one of its helicopters and three navy vessels were sent to the site in case an evacuation was necessary. The regional news agency, Baltic News Services, quoted Klumbys as saying “the weather conditions are not good.”Forecasts for the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea said there were gale force winds, rain showers, poor visibility and risk of thunder storms in the region.Jakobsen wasn’t aware of any rescue operation, saying there was no evacuation.“But in this kind of situation, everyone steps in,” he said. The Regina Seaways was built in 2010 and can carry up to 500 passengers.___David Keyton in Stockholm, Liudas Dapkus in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Jim Heintz in Moscow, contributed to this story.___A previous version of this story was corrected to show that Kiel is in Germany, not Lithuania.last_img read more

first_imgLiving with a smoker after age 20 is associated with a 15 per cent greater risk of developing high blood pressure, warn researchers, adding that avoiding smoky environments can reduce the risk of hypertension. Passive smoking at home or work was linked with a 13 per cent increased risk of hypertension. Exposure to passive smoking for 10 years or more was related to a 17 per cent increased risk of hypertension and men and women were equally affected, said the researchers at “EuroHeartCare 2019″, a scientific congress of the European Society of Cardiology, in Milan, Italy on Friday. Also Read – The Puja carnival”Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke regardless of whether the smoker is still in the room,” said study author Professor Byung Jin Kim from Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea. “Our study in non-smokers shows that the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) is higher with longer duration of passive smoking – but even the lowest amounts are dangerous,” Kim added. This is the first large study to assess the association between secondhand smoke and hypertension in never-smokers verified by urinary levels of cotinine, the principal metabolite of nicotine. Also Read – Wave City brings special offers this NavratraIt included 131,739 never-smokers, one-third men, and an average age of 35 years. Participants with hypertension were significantly more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work (27.9 per cent) than those with normal blood pressure (22.6 per cent). Hypertension was significantly more common in people exposed to passive smoke at home or work (7.2 per cent) compared to no exposure (5.5 per cent). “The results suggest that it is necessary to keep completely away from secondhand smoke, not just reduce exposure, to protect against hypertension,” said Professor Kim.last_img read more

Then-junior quarterback Braxton Miller (5) runs down the field for extra yards in a game against Buffalo Aug. 31 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 40-20. Miller will move to a new position for the Buckeyes for the 2015 season. Credit: Lantern file photoCHICAGO — On July 23, redshirt senior Braxton Miller announced through Sports Illustrated that he would no longer be playing quarterback for Ohio State. Instead, the two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year would be moving to wide receiver for his final season in Columbus.OSU coach Urban Meyer was initially reserved about confirming Miller’s announcement but Thursday at the 2015 Big Ten Media Days, he offered a more concrete answer.“I think Braxton will play receiver,” Meyer said. The switch, however, according to Meyer, was somewhat of a plan B.After Miller and his family approached Meyer roughly a month and a half ago to discuss what a plan B would be, Meyer said they “dove right into it” and began working on the switch. Now for roughly a month, Meyer and wide receivers coach Zach Smith have spent time preparing Miller for the new position. However all of the coaches’ work has come without a football.“It’s all been footwork,” Meyer said. “You can condition position specific and that’s what he’s been doing.”When fall camp for the Buckeyes commences in a week, Meyer, a former receiver coach for Illinois State, Notre Dame and Colorado State from 1989-2000, said he personally will work with Miller from day one to develop his skills for his new role.“I was a receiver coach for a long time,” Meyer said. “So I’m going to work with him myself and see if we can get him ready.”Meyer did acknowledge that he has yet to see the Huber Heights, Ohio, native catch passes but the reactions from some teammates have been positive.“Feedback I’m getting from guys like J.T. (Barrett) and Cardale (Jones) is that he’s very athletic obviously and he can catch the ball,” Meyer said. “I’ve not seen him do that. I’m anxious to see him do that.”Senior linebacker Joshua Perry said although Miller has not been on the field for 7-on-7 drills due him still recovering from shoulder surgery, Perry has seen running routes and catching the ball.“He’s really good with the ball in his hands. It doesn’t matter what position he’s playing, he’s going to make plays,” Perry said during Big Ten Media Days. “It will be fun to watch him when he gets going.”As for when he gets going, Meyer said it would be “uncommon at least right out of the gate” for him to contribute at his new position right away. But Meyer admitted Miller is “not common.”“He’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached. He’s got an incredible first step,” Meyer said. “My expectation is he’s an impact player.”Miller will get a chance to contribute at his new position on Sept. 7, when the defending national champion Buckeyes are scheduled to open their season against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. read more
