Franz Beckenbauer investigated by Swiss prosecutors

first_img(REUTERS) – Swiss authorities have opened criminal proceedings against German football great Franz Beckenbauer and two former presidents of Germany’s football federation (DFB) in connection with its successful bid for the 2006 World Cup.The Attorney General’s office (OAG) in Bern said the proceedings related to allegations of fraud, criminal mismanagement, money-laundering and misappropriation.Raids were carried out simultaneously in eight locations yesterday with the cooperation of authorities in Germany and Austria, the OAG said.In all, four members of the 2006 tournament’s organising committee, were placed under investigation. They were Beckenbauer – who led West Germany to World Cup wins as both player and manager – former DFB presidents Theo Zwanziger and Wolfgang Niersbach, and former secretary general Horst Schmidt.Beckenbauer, who could not immediately be reached for comment yesterday, has previously admitted to making mistakes but has denied wrongdoing.Widely regarded as one of the game’s finest players, he captained the West Germany team that won the 1974 World Cup and was coach when they won again in 1990.Now 70, he is also a former member of world football body FIFA’s executive committee.Earlier this year, Germany’s DFB commissioned a report into alleged irregularities over the awarding of the 2006 World Cup.The report, published in March, said that while there was no evidence of Germany paying FIFA members in return for votes, payments were made to at least one former FIFA official through a web of accounts involving several other firms or individuals, including Beckenbauer.FIFA has been in turmoil after a wave of indictments last year of football officials on corruption-related charges, and been forced to investigate how a number of World Cups were awarded, notably the 2018 finals to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar.‘FINANCIAL LOSS’The OAG said its investigations focused on the joint financing of a gala, initially at the cost of 7 million euros ($7.80M), later reduced to 6.7 million euros.“It is suspected that the suspects knew that this sum was not being used to fund the gala event, but instead to repay a debt that was not incurred by the DFB,” said the statement. It said the suspects may have “wilfully misled” other members of the committee’s executive board “inducing the other committee members to act in a manner that caused DFB a financial loss.”The World Cup affair, which shocked soccer-mad Germany, was triggered by the payment from the DFB to FIFA, which the DFB said last year was the return of a loan via the ruling body from the late Adidas chief Robert Louis-Dreyfus.last_img read more

first_imgMORE: The glory days of “Monday Night Football”For the Colts to pull off the upset over the Saints and temporarily save their season, they’ll need to key on Michael Thomas. The New Orleans wide receiver leads the NFL with 121 receptions and 1,424 receiving yards this season; he had 11 receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown last week against San Francisco, marking his seventh game with at least 10 receptions in 2019.With at least 10 receptions against Indianapolis, Thomas would surpass Andre Johnson (seven games in 2008) and Wes Welker (seven in 2009) for the most games with at least 10 receptions in a season in NFL history.Below is all you need to know about Week 15’s Monday night game between the Saints and Colts, including the kickoff time and TV channel.Who plays on Monday Night Football tonight?Indianapolis Colts at New Orleans SaintsKickoff time: 8:15 p.m. ETIn both our NFL Week 15 picks against the spread and our straight-up predictions, Sporting News projected a Saints win over the Colts on Monday night. Below are the explanations.Pick against the spread: The Colts have had a tough season without Andrew Luck, but it has little to do with Andrew Luck not being there. The injuries have mounted on offense — to and around Jacoby Brissett — and the defense hasn’t been immune to the run of bad health, either, leading to a sophomore slump for coach Frank Reich. The Colts will hang tough with their offensive and defensive fronts, however. The Saints are the much better and more complete team at the moment, but the Colts have made it a habit of playing one-possession games. Pick: Saints win 30-23 but fail to cover the spread.Straight-up prediction: The Saints get an extra day this week to think about their heartbreaking loss to the 49ers. Good thing they’ll be distracted by the kind of film study that should revive their confidence. While the Colts aren’t far off from the Saints statistically, especially on defense, the records tell the tale of this tape. New Orleans, especially at home and still challenging for a top seed in the NFC playoffs, is by far the more trustworthy team. Pick: Saints 34, Colts 20.MORE: Full betting preview for Saints vs. Colts The meaning of tonight’s “Monday Night Football” game is different for both teams. The Saints, who will host the Colts in a game scheduled to kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN, are looking to improve their standing in the NFL playoff picture a couple weeks after clinching the NFC South. The No. 1 seed in the NFC is still an obtainable goal for New Orleans.Indianapolis, meanwhile, is clinging to dear postseason life, and a loss in New Orleans on Monday night would eliminate the Colts from the playoff hunt in the AFC. Thanks two three straight losses heading into Week 15, Indy at this point is closer to a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft than a playoff spot.
