first_imgATHENS — Panathinaikos ended Olympiakos’ 27-match unbeaten league run on March 2 with a stormy 3-0 away victory that was interrupted for long stretches by home fans who threw flares and other objects onto the pitch. After the game, Olympiakos fans took their frustration out on riot police, attacking them with whatever projectile was available. A police motorcycle was set on fire and police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.During the match, Panathinaikos coach Yiannis Anastasiou was hit in the face by a plastic cup full of liquid and ice cubes. Very little football was played in the last 12 minutes due to the missile-throwing after Olympiakos was awarded a penalty.“I feel a little dizzy, but I’m otherwise fine,” said Anastasiou, who compared the hostile atmosphere of the match to that of Olympiakos’ home victory over Manchester United in the Champions League.“I saw Tuesday’s game … and marveled at the fantastic atmosphere. Now, we have reverted back to our usual culture, where we (away teams) are not sure we will leave the field in one piece. What can I say,” added Anastasiou, who had a bandage over his left eye.Alejandro Dominguez missed the spotkick four minutes after it was awarded and the referee didn’t make up for time lost.In a separate incident, Olympiakos’ Michael Olaitan collapsed in the 30th minute and lay unconscious on the field for some time while being treated by both teams’ doctors. He was taken to hospital for checks, and was conscious when taken off on a stretcher. An Olympiakos official told TV channel Novasports after the game that Olaitan had injured his neck when falling on the pitch, but that he was feeling better.During the game, Panathinaikos packed the midfield and tried to hit Olympiakos on the break — a tactic that produced the visitors’ first two goals. In the 45th, a long pass found Marcus Berg inside the area and he laid the ball back for Danijel Pranjic to score with a drive from just outside the area.In the 67th, another long ball found Berg on the break and he outsprinted defender Avraam Papadopoulos before shooting past goalkeeper Roberto. In the 89th, when the game had temporarily resumed, Panathinaikos won a free kick on the left side and Mehdi Abeid found a gap in the wall to beat a motionless Roberto. Immediately afterward, a volley of flares had Panathinaikos goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino fleeing his own area for his safety.“Nothing turned out well for us today,” said a despondent Michel, the Olympiakos coach.Olympiakos midfielder David Fuster added: “We did not play like we should, but we should not linger over this. It was a bitter moment in an otherwise very good season.”Indeed, even after losing to its hated archrival, Olympiakos still has a 19-point lead with seven rounds remaining and is well on its way to winning a record 41st league championship, its 16th in 18 seasons, starting in 1996-97.Closest challenger PAOK squandered a 2-0 lead and allowed host Ergotelis to earn a 2-2 draw. This enabled Atromitos, a 3-1 winner at Panetolikos, to go level on points with second-place PAOK. Panathinaikos is fourth, five points behind Atromitos and PAOK. Asteras beat Panthrakikos 3-1 and Kalloni drew 1-1 at Panionios.(Demetris Nellas)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

first_imgCALGARY — A sense of calm comes over Nikki Pike when she’s with her three hens Nugget, Nibble and Noodle. The Calgary woman has had anxiety and depression since she was sexually abused as a girl. Spending time with backyard chickens provided a safe haven during that traumatic time, and the mental link between the birds and peaceful feelings has followed her into adulthood.“When I’m holding them, I’m feeling, I’m smelling, I’m hearing,” she says. “What calms me down is all of those sensory aspects of being with them.”Pike is working to formally register her “girls” as livestock emotional support animals under a new city program. In December 2017, a complaint prompted the city to investigate her backyard chicken coop.“I was worried that somebody was going to come and take them away,” she recalls. “That’s incredibly stressful on top of my already crazy life that involves a lot of anxiety.”Pike urged the city to amend its pet bylaw to allow animals normally found on farms into urban homes for mental-health purposes. Council voted to make the change last fall.Pike is happy the city has recognized her chickens’ importance to her mental health — and that the bylaw takes into account animal welfare and effects on neighbours.Pike’s hens spend most of their time in a heated coop decked out with disco balls, but they come inside at night for cuddles and treats. Her two sons, eight and six, like to read them bedtime stories.Chickens are more affectionate and show more personality than people realize, says Pike.“They will hop up on you and demand snuggles.” To get a permit, an applicant must provide a letter from a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist stating an animal is needed to treat a mental-health condition. Many websites will provide a boilerplate letter for a fee. But Aalika Kohli, a business and policy analyst for the city, says those won’t do.“The process is pretty robust to ensure there are no loopholes.”The city must be satisfied the animal has adequate space and that there’s contact information for a veterinarian who can provide specialized care. An alternate home for the animal must also be lined up.The city has not received any applications since its online portal opened in March, but Kohli says she’s expecting five to 10 a year. She thinks most applications will be for chickens, pot-bellied pigs and miniature horses. Larger animals, like cows, would probably require too much space, but Kohli says each application will be weighed case by case.Strathmore, east of Calgary, is the only other jurisdiction the city found with a similar bylaw. An exception there was made for a family with a pot-bellied pig.  In 2014, Trevor Dahl and his family convinced Strathmore’s town council to allow Chuckles, a pot-bellied pig, into their home. The Dahls had taken in Chuckles as a rescue a few years earlier, but were told he couldn’t stay. Dahl says the pig was a big help to his daughter, then 10, who had been having nightmares after a large fire on their street.“As soon as he started sleeping through the night, she started sleeping through the night, too,” he says. The Dahls have since moved to a more rural area where county officials have no problem with Chuckles and another pig named Fairie as long as they’re not a nuisance.Unlike service animals — such as dogs that help blind people get around — emotional support animals don’t need training.Dahl took Chuckles to be trained in Edmonton anyway to bolster the case before Strathmore’s town council. The course was a breeze for the pig, he says.Dahl believes municipalities should regulate pot-bellied pigs the same as cats or dogs. They’re clean and quiet, but their sharp minds do need to be kept occupied with games and toys to keep them out of trouble.“They are more loyal than a dog. They’re incredibly intelligent. They’re extremely affectionate.”Lauren Krugel, The Canadian Presslast_img read more

first_imgCurrently, free and open source software means anyone can modify and repurpose it for their needs. This also means that companies can take advantage of such open source software and use it for their commercial advantage. The ‘commons’ clause aims to change that and forbids monetization that mostly entails commercial use. The case in favor of the commons clause Companies that commercialize open source projects don’t give much back and this is an abuse of open source projects. The projects are open source for the idea to promote sharing and learning, not necessarily for tech giants to use it commercially make money from projects that were available freely. This is not illegal but can be just viewed as an abuse of open source projects where it is being used to make money without the creators/community getting anything back. What is the commons clause? The Commons Clause website states contributed by FOSSA, the founder and CEO is Kevin Wang. The task of drafting the commons clause was handed over to open source lawyer Heather Meeker. It is not a license itself but an additional clause that can be added to open source project licenses. It adds a narrow commercial restriction on top of the existing open-source license. The additional clause restricts the ability to ‘sell’ the software while keeping all the original license permissions unchanged. This is in the interest of preserving open source projects and helping them thrive. To avoid any confusion, when commons clause is added to a project, it is no longer ‘open source’ by the formal definition. Adding commons clause means the project still has many elements aligning to an open source project like free access, freedom to modify and redistribute but not sell. Basically, when commons clause is added to a project, the project can no longer be monetized. The Commons Clause FAQ states: “The Commons Clause was intended, in practice, to have virtually no effect other than force a negotiation with those who take predatory commercial advantage of open source development. In practice, those are some of the biggest technology businesses in the world, some of whom use open source software but don’t give back to the community. Freedom for others to commercialize your software comes with starting an open source project, and while that freedom is important to uphold, growth and commercial pressures will inevitably force some projects to close. The Commons Clause provides an alternative.” The case against the commons clause There are discussions on various forums regarding this clause with conflicting views. So, I will try to give my views on this. Opposers of the clause believe a software becomes propriety on applying commons clause. This means that any service created from the original software remains the intellectual property of the original company to sell. The fear is that this would discourage the community from contributing to open-source projects with a commons clause attached since the new products made will remain with the company. Only they will be able to monetize it if they choose to do so. On the one hand, companies that make millions of dollars from open source software and giving anything back is not in line with the ethos of open source software. But on the other hand, smaller startups and individual contributors get penalized by this clause too. What if small companies contribute to a large open source project and want to use the derived product for their growth? They can’t anymore if the commons clause is applied to the project they contributed to. It is also not right to think that a contributor deserves 50% of the profits if a company makes millions of dollars using their open source project. What can be done then? The commons clause doesn’t really help the open source community, it only prevents bigger companies from monetizing it unfairly. I think major tech companies can license open source software strictly for commercial use separately. Perhaps a financial profit benchmark (say $100,000) can be made for paid licensing. That is, if you make x money from the open source software, pay for a license for further use. This will help small companies from running out of money and force closing their source. The commons clause currently is at 1.0, and there will be future revisions. It was recently adopted by Redis after Amazon using their open source project commercially.
