first_img Share President Donald Trump on Thursday referred to African nations as “s**thole countries” during a meeting on immigration with a bipartisan group of senators, according to a Democratic aide and another person familiar with the conversation.Trump made the comment during a discussion of U.S. visa and immigration policies inside the Oval Office. Trump was meeting with the senators to discuss a bipartisan plan to grant legal protections to the roughly 800,000 immigrants who are in the country illegally after being brought to the country as children. During the conversation Trump also questioned why the U.S would want to accept people from countries like Haiti and said the U.S. should want more people from countries like Norway, the aides said. The comments were first reported by the Washington Post. The senators had hoped to convince Trump to support their plan which pairs increased funding for border security with new legal status for immigrants who were previously protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA. The White House rejected the plan and asked the senators to keep working on a new proposal.Evan Vucci/APSen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., speaks during a meeting with President Donald Trump and lawmakers on immigration policy Tuesday. The White House issued a statement rejecting “weak and dangerous stopgap measures” on immigration but did not deny Trump’s remarks.“The President will only accept an immigration deal that adequately addresses the visa lottery system and chain migration — two programs that hurt our economy and allow terrorists into our country,” said deputy White House press secretary Raj Shah. “Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation.”The meeting delivered a significant setback to the bipartisan working group which first announced the deal earlier on Thursday afternoon.“We are at a deal,” Flake told reporters on Capitol Hill. “So we’ll be talking to the White House about that and I hope we can move forward with that.” Flake added that “it’s the only game in town. There is no other bill.”Later that afternoon, after members of the six-person Senate group presented their agreement to Trump, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told reporters there was more negotiating to be done.“I was at the White House talking about what I thought was a bipartisan proposal,” Graham said following the meeting. “No deal yet.”White House Legislative Affairs Director Marc Short told reporters on Capitol Hill that the group — which included Flake, Graham, Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; Michael Bennet, D-Colo.; Cory Gardner, R-Colo.; and Robert Menendez, D-N.J. — presented what amounted to a small group agreement but the White House did not sign off.“We’ve got a long ways to go,” Short said. The negotiations began in earnest at the end of December, months after Trump first announced in September 2017 that DACA would be ending, and gave Congress until March 5 of this year to come up with a replacement.Democrats and other supporters of the so-called DREAMers have called for a legislative implementation of DACA to be attached to a must-pass spending bill that would keep the government funded beyond January 19.As part of any agreement about DACA, President Trump has insisted that there be funding for a wall on the southern border with Mexico, which many Democrats have opposed. He also called for ending the diversity visa lottery, a State Department program that gives residents of nations with few migrants coming to the U.S. a chance for a green card, and for ending family-based migration (called “chain migration” by its opponents) that allows extended family members of immigrants already in the U.S. legally to come to the U.S. as well. The agreement among senators came as more than 100 corporate CEOs urged Congress to “act immediately and pass a permanent bipartisan legislative solution to enable Dreamers who are currently living, working, and contributing to our communities to continue doing so.”The letter continues, “The imminent termination of the DACA program is creating an impending crisis for workforces across the country.”Julieta Garibay, co-founder and director of the Texas chapter of United We Dream (UWD) –the largest ‘Dreamer’ group in the United States–, told Houston Public Media that the ‘Dreamers’ will not “take no for an answer.”“We know there is the will and now it’s just a matter of leadership,” noted Garibay, while adding that “we know it’s something that can be done by January 19th.”The activist anticipated there will be “a lot of ups and downs” in the next few days as members of Congress and the White House negotiate an immigration bill.Garibay also stressed her group wants the potential legislation to provide a path to citizenship for ‘Dreamers’.last_img read more

first_imgPhoto via Twitter @defendernetworkCouncil Member Larry Green.Houston City Council member Larry Green was found dead on Tuesday. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (HCIFS) is working to determine the cause of death and a spokeswoman for the HCIFS said an autopsy will be performed on Wednesday.Green served on the Houston City Council since 2012 representing District K, which stretches from the edge of the Texas Medical Center to Fort Bend County. He chaired the city’s Transportation, Technology and Infrastructure Committee.Mayor Sylvester Turner released a statement in which he said he was “shocked and grieving” over Green’s “untimely death.” “Larry Green was the first and only District K council member following the south/southwest district’s creation for the 2011 municipal elections. He was the right person to give definition to this new alliance of neighborhoods and businesses: A hard worker. Not a grandstander. He shared in the economic advances and public safety strides of the district without taking the credit for himself. ‘We’ have fought together ‘to build up the economy of District K,’ he wrote on his campaign web site,” added the mayor in his statement. Mayor Turner also praised Green through his Twitter account.Council Member Larry Green captured the essence of being an enlightened public servant for Houston. My heart goes out to his family, his colleagues and all city residents.— Sylvester Turner (@SylvesterTurner) March 6, 2018 Council Member Green was fond of pointing out that his council district had more undeveloped land than any other and was therefore ‘filled with opportunities.’ Well so was he. Part of this tragedy is that he is no longer with us to follow through in his uniquely industrious way.— Sylvester Turner (@SylvesterTurner) March 6, 2018 On the death of Council Member Larry Green: Houston has lost a groundbreaking advocate for equality, economic opportunity and neighborhood safety.— Sylvester Turner (@SylvesterTurner) March 6, 2018At Tuesday’s public session at City Hall, council members expressed their sympathies.Council member Dave Martin said Green would always wear green, even if the mayor asked them to wear red for Christmas.“Tomorrow I’m wearing a green tie,” Martin said. “And I’m inviting everybody in the city to wear the color green in memory of our dear friend and brother Larry Green.”U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, herself a former City Council member, attended the meeting to honor Green.“A green man he was,” she said. “His celebration of his district and the improvements of both in terms of infrastructure, flooding, but if there was a project, mayor, that he could grab for his district, he was grabbing it.”Later, in a statement distributed via email, Jackson Lee noted: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of my dear friend, Councilman Larry Green, and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones.”“Although the years of his life were short,” the congresswoman’s statement added “the life lived in those years by Councilman Larry Green was vibrant, dynamic, purposeful, and directed toward service to others.”Al Green, another Democratic Congressman from Houston, also expressed his condolences. “I knew Larry for many years as a fierce advocate and public servant who dedicated his career in service to his constituents,” the congressman expressed in a statement and noted that Green “served Houston honorably by creating a sense of community throughout his work within Houston and Fort Bend County neighborhoods and businesses.”“The City of Houston has lost one of its greatest assets,” the congressman’s statement added “but his legacy will continue and support for his efforts will surely grow throughout the community. His tireless commitment to constituents in District K should be admired by all.”Texas State Senator Borris Miles (Democrat-District 13) also lamented Green’s death and underlined in a statement that the Council member “worked to increase economic development and opportunities in his district, improve policing to keep families safe and over the past six months, on Harvey recovery.”“He was well-respected among community leaders, business leaders and the Texas delegation and worked hard to ensure Houston was in the best position possible for success,” added Miles, who explained he was had become a friend of Green’s since they were 13 years-old.center_img Sharelast_img read more

first_imgRemember the movie American Desi? And even more specifically the song Aap Jaisa Koi that had a boy crooning the lyrics of the hit Bolly number with a spectacular acapella touch to it?We are talking about Penn Masala — the acapella band from the University of Pennsylvania that has music lovers paying them good attention as they render interesting mash-ups of Bollywood and international songs with their own signature touch. And guess what, they are on their second India tour and their last stop is Delhi. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Talking history, Penn Masala was started by four students in 1996 in the university. The inspiration came from the eclectic mix of music these students grew up on. Bollywood, south Asian tracks and influences merged with international strains and found place in acapella sounds, and there was Penn Masala, says current president Sam Levenson. What started in 1996 and found shape through seven albums (Awaaz, 11 PM Soundcheck, The Brown Album, Pehchaan, On Detours, Panoramic Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with Netflix and the compilation album Out of Stock) that included some strong original compositions is now in its 13th year and counting. Every year, singers graduate and new talent is brought in. Levenson joined Penn Masala in 2009 as a fresher and is now in his senior year and as he says — there is no looking back. And do the alumni ever come together? Of course they do, says Levenson. Every fall the old students come together to pass on the Penn Masala history to the freshers, and there are informal meets around the year. Once singers graduate, they get busy with the non-musical part of their careers, adds Levenson, but they are always there to support the team. Speaking about the alumni, Levenson points out that quite a few old Penn Masala members are in Delhi and they are all coming in for the 11 January performance. Back in India after 2009, Penn Masala has already performed in Mumbai and Pune, there are two more cities on the cards before Delhi becomes the last stop on this tour. While Mumbai had almost 700 people attending their show, Pune was more fun, says Levenson. The crowd, the ambience, the vibe and the sound system was wonderful, he points out. ‘Delhi gave us an energetic crowd three years back and we expect a big show this time around as well,’ he adds.So what is their modus operandi this time around? They have tied up with Teach for India campaign and have already given a few schools a taste of their music skills and they hope to extend the collaboration over this year working on mutual promotions and fund-raising events. Penn Masala is also hoping to tie up with media houses like they did last year to create an Independance Day music video on Maa Tujhe Salaam. They have also started work on their music video. And the icing on 2013 is their eighth album that is all set for a March release. What next for the band? Bollywood, pat comes the reply. ‘We want to work with artistes who have inspired the Penn Masala kind of music,’ says Levenson.
